If I were buying a used "as is" tractor, I would inspect it with a fine tooth comb. However a factory reconditioned tractor I would expect to be in full working order or at least close. I received my first tractor from Equipment King Inc a, Mitsubishi MT21D in June. It fell apart within less than an hour. Several cotter pins were missing from the mower and it almost came loose, also the temp and fuel gauges were not hooked up. I repaired myself to keep working. Then later in week the rear end got stuck in 3rd gear. I called they said keep using till I could bring it in. End of week rear end locked up all together and the front end was barley working; useless tractor. I, at my own expense returned the tractor, said I wanted a different one. They got me a Yanmar FX24D, when they delivered it; it seemed much better than the first and worked pretty well for a week. However, no headlamps, blinkers also bad, low on dirty oil, rusty water in radiator, leaky front differential, Bad tube in flat tire, several lose or missing nuts and bolts, Water temp gauge not hooked up, loose stripped treads on linkage to mower, melted and exposed wiring near voltage regulator " Caused by their technician hooking the ground for the electrical system to the radiator that is floated on rubber and can not ground properly", and more. They picked up and agreed to fix. Twice i have made the 120-mile trip to inspect at their request and both times still problems. They agreed to have it to me on Sat. no show, then after calling them, they said 1st thing Monday or your money back, no show again. After calling they said they would let me know Tues. When I asked for my money back on Tues. afternoon they refused as soon as they knew I was on my way to get it and had asked for confirmation that a check was waiting for me. They do not seem to be able to keep their commitment. They do have nice paint jobs. They said in their AD "Extensive process of reconditioning" &"Quality control technicians inspect the tractor for any problems" I find this hard to believe. Please help this from happening to anyone else.

"Factory Reconditioning" is something that isn't happening PERIOD. The Mitsubishi factory nor the Yanmar factory is reconditioning tractors. Most are brought in and reconditioned to whatever level or standard that the importer wants to recondition them to. For some reconditioning is getting the tractor to start, for some it is giving the tractor a nice paint job, including painting the old oil filter. For some changing the oil, fluids, and filters, changing bearings and seals and fixing any problems found. There are some that claim that they completely tear the engines down and inspect for problems and then a complete repaint. Do they? Only they know for sure. In any case a thorough test drive is necessary. Not just a 5 minute drive around the parking lot but a 30 minute run with a piece of PTO driven equipment running. Shift ever lever, try every gear. Flip every switch and turn every knob.

Do me once, shame on you , do me twice, shame on me. Very old saying, (I cleaned it up a little, but you get the gest) still applies today. Dont condem the tractor maker for the misrepresentation by the seller. Next time,if there is a next time, do some homework first. There are many good posts on this site that will help you learn what to look for in a used or so called "rebuilt tractor".
Sorry for your bad luck, hope things work out for you.

Some people have had luck filing a complaint with the local Better Business Bureau. Sometimes it will make them give you your money back.

Your state attorney general can put a move on them, too.

Hmmmm.........seems to me I spent 3 hours looking at my Yanmar before I bought it. Not a single surprise when I got it home. Besides, I spent the better part of 6 months doing research first.

I must first explain my postion on used equipment. I retired 6 years ago. My title was Machinery Sales Coordinator. My responsibility was to find new machines and used machines for my sales people to sale. We had 12 to 15 sales people at any given time. And done 5 to 6 million dollars in sales. One of the thing I tried to teach sales people was good communication on used equipment. So we developed a scale to go by. Maybe if the Grey market people would develoe such scale, there would be less miss understanding. First Classisfaction , There is no such thing as REBUILT used equipment. To rebuild equipment it means disassembly and restore to orginial specification. There is no way a resaler can spend this kind of money and stay in business. Second Classifaction: Reconditioned: This means everything is working and in excellant shape. Very few pieces of euipment today are reconditioned. Third Classifaction is REWORKED: Thats means we have checked it out and to best of our knowledge everthing is working. Now it might not be working like new, but working. Fourth: AS IS: Thats means what you see is what you get. I hate to sell a piece of equipment "AS IS", because it always comes back, with the statement "Will you fix this one thing". I buy and sell Yanmar tractor and I guess you would call me Half%$##. I have a place on main street that I rent and I keep implements in my yard. I've bought tractors from several different sources. I've about learned what to expect. I'm pretty picky about what I sell. Every Tractor I sell I test myself and drive for several hours. I represent to my customer as in "Good Working Shape to the best of my knowledge". Customer satisfication is the greatest thing we resaler has got going. I expect to fix some things when I get one home. Because my standards and some of the importers standards are different. I not saying wrong, but different. But I need these guys to stay in business. I have bought several tractor from Equipment King and they are lots better than I get from some of the other sources. Sounds to me like there is breakdown of communication. Why don't you go up there and check out one before you bring it home and make sure it meets you standards. Not wait till you get it home.

Well said Joe. His experience is very unfortunate and makes grey market tractors and dealers look bad. However, he must take responsibility for what he buys by thoroughly inspecting the tractor, trying out all of its features, and asking many, many questions. I always allow my customers to try out the tractor and I point out any flaws I am aware of that I haven't yet fixed. Saves headaches in the long run. I too am fussier than some sellers. I fix lights, horns, accessories, change engine, trans, hydraulic oils and filters, change anti-freeze (a must here in Wisconsin!!) and try to prep the tractor for sale as best as I can.
