Maybe the part about how after dribbling the fuel in he lit it on fire with his lighter? I could see thinking that would save some cranking.

Ether starting fluid nowadays has "upper cylinder lubricant" so it should be safe to use..

It isn't just the oil dilution that is the problem with either, it also has a different burn rate. More of an explosion than a controlled burn. Though with that said, proper usage has little if any effect. It's when it is used excessively instead of repairing other problems (like poor battery connections) that the real problems can arise. It doen't really matter if you take 100 hours off of the life of a 3000 hour engine by using ether only on the coldest days. Just be sure to use it properly, on an engine that is already cranking, with just a quick shot, and never on an engine with glow plugs.

WD-40 works as well as ether, and provides some degree of lubrication.

I know a guy that ran his Duramax out of fuel, the batteries were weak,,
so,, rather than extensive cranking, he dribbled a few drops of diesel into the engine somehow,,,

upon cranking, one of the pistons promptly exited through the side of the block,,, :confused2:

So,, I am a little shy of doing anything like that,,,

I didn't state pour some gasoline into intake. When gasoline soaked towel is held over open intake only gasoline "vapors" enter engine not droplets.

Totally agree. Works good on small gasoline also.

Up until a few years ago,WD40 worked well for my small engines,then something changed. I was told that propane was used as propellent at one time. All it does for me now is foul the plugs.

They changed the propellant in WD40 some time ago from propane to carbon dioxide, though many of the old cans were still in the supply line until the early 2000's (then they got sued a few years later because the valve were failing under the new higher pressures)
