If however it is only for a short period, you could get away with it. Short period is not long!

I think we are on the same page. If you only need it for a short period, don't go to the trouble of trenching it. You could just get an edging tool or a flat shovel, drive it 6" into the ground, pry back a slit of earth, and tuck the cable down into it. That's how I ran the hot wire for my electric fence through a steep hill where the trencher wouldn't go.
