I've managed to get out with small tractors and utility tractors since every one I had was MFWA and had a FEL. However, working around lakes is where I've run into trouble. I was scooping slop out of my own personal lake with a Cat 955 high lift I owned and, with the bucket full against the bottom of the island in the middle of my lake, I blew the hydraulic line right where it comes out of the pump. Sitting in 4" of water pointed downhill into a nearly straight up bank with the bucket full, I was stuck big time. Of all things I've ever fixed in my life, that was the worst fix. I had to drop all of the belly pans (while laying in 40 degree water and mud) to get to that pump. That really sucked.

While working on a job (as a temp no less ) I got a D11R stuck cutting a lake out. In the strip mines old lakes often have to be drained and all the muck scraped out ahead of the actual mining. I was assigned to cut the dam out to drain the lake and clear the slop. I'd already done that two or three times before, so no big deal, right? You just cut about 6" to 8" off the dam on each pass and let the water run through your tracks and out as you work. Near the bottom of the dam I discovered that this dam apparently had damage from critters that allowed water to seep under the base of the dam and made it really sloppy. By the time I gave up I could open the door on the D11 and just walk straight out on flat ground. If you've ever seen one of those machines before, the cab floor is about 10' above the ground. Well, that got me some overtime (which I wasn't paid for) during the next two shifts when it took 2 more D11's to get it out. That wasn't fun at all. Ever try to carry 1 1/2" chain, in mud? That was part of my punishment; you got it stuck, you drag the chain to it to hook to it as well as the winch cables. Sorry I don't have any pictures, it was a long time ago...and I really haven't had any temp jobs there to speak of.

Here are a couple of pictures of a similar tractor/dozer I was showing my son. The step ladder against the tracks is a 6' ladder. You can imagine how stuck one would be when the ground level is even with the cab floor.

WOW.. Just looking at the ground gives no indication of how soft it was.. Did you EVER gets the ruts out of the yard?

The problem TexasDodge had has happened to many people. They forget the laws of tractor physics. A tractor that clean has no buffer to fight off the earths magnetic field. Thus it was pulled into the ground whereas a tractor properly encrusted with mud and dust would have had no trouble in this area.
