And I had a 2001 SuperDuty 7.3. Drove it 235,000 miles without a single issue except tires, batteries, and one crankshaft position sensor. Sold it at the end of 2005 and it is still driving around Savannah. Had friends with Dodges working under similar conditions that kept blowing through transmissions. I don't hardly think you have a leg to stand on with the "value argument" because your experience is not the gold standard. (nor is mine)

Mercedes and BMW actually have some of the highest customer complaints...and are seldom "recommended" products by independent testing agencies like Consumer reports, or even by more biased ones and are even recommended as "cars to stay away from".

Sorry to continue the banter, but the incessant love for a warranty reminded me of this scene

Oh, and put me second in line for the broken Hypertherm!......no, seriously, if it exists:rolleyes:

The Power Max 45 surely does exist and if you are in line to buy it and not just a smoke blower lets discuss. I can get $300 for the torch on E-bay. I'll sell you the whole works for $500. That way you can send it to Jim who will ( I guess ) fix it for you. I would be glad to send you pics. It looks like brand new. If you Really think Jim can do anything at all with this unit you should be in good hands. $500.00 lets do it..

I don't run a repair business, however the Powermax45 (like all of the Hypertherm's) has a downloadable detailed service manual...tells how to troubleshoot (assuming you are handy with an electrical meter and are safe working with live power) many internal components, as well as step by step board and component removal and installation. Even a broken Powermax45 will sell quickly for $500.

My Ford had the ill fated 6.0 diesel. Ford extended the warranty on some of the common (very common) failure items....which was respectable. The reason I won't buy another Ford truck...is that 3 dealers lowballed me at trade in time....for the reason that it had the 6.0 motor. They wouldn't give me crap for trade value on their own brand. Ford Corporate should have stepped up and offered incentives for those trading their mistake in for another Ford. The 7.3, on the other hand....is a great engine.

Depends who you talk to and which car magazines you read regarding the Mercedes and BMW argument. Consumer reports does not provide the type of reviews of vehicles that I am interested in. The articles from magazines I read are BMW fans for sure. My take is that over the last 20 years all vehicles have improved rather dramatically...they cost more, but last longer and are far more efficient.....there of course are a few duds.

My value argument for things that I buy is strong, and I have both legs to stand on. I buy everything based on how long it will last and how much it will cost me to operate over that period of time. That is my gold standard.

To some, low purchase price is more important (and it was with me as well 35 years ago), and fix it or throw it away when you are done with it. Everyone is entitled to buy vehicles and tools based on the needs that are important to their use...and there are plenty of choices....for sure!

Jim

I already had it checked out by a service center.. It needs a thyristor situated at the top center of the main board. That's all it needs. The board is $690.00 plus labor to install. If you can replace the thyristor yourself. More power to you. I have it and would gladly take $500 for it. If anyone wants to see pics, Let me know. ( can't wait to see how many responses I get )

Hmmm...tempting, but the 45 can be had for 1600 online, yours would be a 400 discount with a bit of gamble. How did you determine it was the part that is needed? Does the 500 include shipping? Any consumables with it? How long is the lead on the torch?

I like my Hobart 750 and it has done everything I have needed, but a Hypertherm would be soooo nice.....:licking:

I think a service center should be able to tell what's wrong with it. It wasn't checked out by the kid working the till at Mcdonalds.

So, let's see here. A used unit from Hypertherm when it breaks is not worth fixing and is a gamble because it would only be 400.00 less than a new one? Jim said that was a good price. A value on a unit like that has to drop so far as to be not worth a new cheap import plasma cutter if it has a problem? I think that Yomax's point has been proven folks...and the rhetoric has come back to bite this argument in the ole "power cord". FYI, a power board for an Everlast is a little over a hundred dollars. 1/7th the cost of the unit. The board cost of the Hypertherm and the repair bill costs nearly as much as an Everlast PowerPlasma 50. Yeah, it is a gamble. Use a machine 3 years and then it's not worth fixing if it does tear up because the cost to repair is nearly half the unit's new cost, and people balk because you are asking only 500.00 for it. Where's the resale value now? Where's all the "value" to it of buying an over priced brand? That is the oldest form of bait and switch... Buy a new unit because it costs too much to repair the one you bought from us 3 years ago. Sure someone is going to say, "I'd still rather have the Hypertherm that is broken than a new Everlast with a 5 year warranty.(or insert your choice of import brand and warranty here)". But the emperor clothes are see through...

It's a gamble because I do not know the guy, he lives across the country, and I have no idea who or how it was diagnosed, nor do I know the cost of the parts to repair.

Please don't put words in my mouth or try to assume what I mean in my posts. Sorry, I will not become another shill or testimony for your product or it's values. I have never said your products are junk, I have only mentioned what products I like and why based on my experience. Not every post or comment needs to be a chance to take a shot at other products or push yours.

Really? I ask some serious questions that any person would ask before spending hundreds with a stranger and cheap shots is what I get? Nice.
