Stupid? No.

But begs the question, are you ever going to get $2000 worth of work out of it? Or $2000 worth of enjoyment out of it?

Same here......
Last June, I bought a 2006 L48 TLB for 32K
Am I.... "ever going to get ($32,000) worth of work out of it?"
He11 NO!

How fast does the value of the tool depreciate?
You probably still have most of the $2000. It痴 not like you bought a truckload of cantaloupes.

Now I知 thinking I need a truckload 0f cantaloupes !

My son asked why I spent so very much on my new Taco Wagon(2018 Ram 2500 Power Wagon). I could have got a brand new half ton for a whole lot less.

There are two major reasons - I've always wanted a Power Wagon & I've yet to figure a way that I can take it($$$) with me.

I'm firmly in the camp - you got the $$$ - use it however you want.

Taco's give me indigestion................

I spent $3,000 on a hydraulic post hole digger for my FEL to finish off a fence project. I probably now dig maybe 10 to 20 holes a year.

It was never going to be justified financially - but I have a big smile on my face every time I dig a hole! :)

PS Pedantic Police Alert!

It doesn't "beg the question", but it may raise the question ....... :D

I can relate to the OP's desire for independence. I often have a surprisingly difficult time finding someone to do work for me. I've also had numerous experiences where I have to do ridiculous repair work to clean up the "professional" work.

I also have some possessions with much less practical value than an expensive tool. If you can afford it and you want it, then what else is money for?

Maybe 10 years ago I bought a $500+ 42 quart Engel fridge freezer 12VDC-120VAC for a camping trip and I know the guys in my shop thought I was nuts. I almost thought about selling it a few years ago but decided to keep it when I saw new ones are going over $1000. I had an A-frame Chalet brand pop-up and the 3-way fridge croaked a couple weeks before my annual vacation. It saved the day. It's cold in 15 minutes and once down to temp runs very little.

That’s nothing. I dropped $22,000 on my plasma table and plasma cutter for my shop toy. Ive had 10 years plus of work out of it and still going strong.

I have you beat by a couple thou. I paid 25 for mine and another 5 for the Hyper Therm. I wanted a water jet but the wife said no....:D

I’m with Oosik too...

Back in 1997, my father retired after 32 good years of public service as a peace officer and retired as a police chief. (It’s good when one never fires his service weapon in the line of duty)

One day, he had me come over to look at this RV he was considering purchasing, a nice 40’ diesel pusher. He was apprehensive, talking about it for a while but had that look of a little guilt so I knew something was gnawing at him so I cornered him and told him to spill it.

Basically, he said he was afraid to be spending “our” inheritance on an RV. This man has at times, worked 3 jobs but almost always 2. I almost smacked him on the head and gave him a stern mouthful that all I want are family heirlooms and thick photo albums of his trips across America during his golden years. I’ve never talked “over” my father the way that fathers do to their kids so it was an awakening for him. I’m proud to say now that my parents are doing just that! Here’s a bonus, when I moved from CA to WA was creating a nice concrete RV pad (with hookups) for my parents anytime they choose to visit. :)

Any “advisors” that has no skin in the game can go sit on a vertical bottle IMO.

I've spent $200 to drill 8 holes. I've spent $1000 for a vacuum gauge. They are all items that I felt were worthwhile. I'm in the camp of it's your money, you don't have to justify how you spend it.
