Everyone things Im stupid because I paid 2,000 for a tool

I can relate to the OP's desire for independence. I often have a surprisingly difficult time finding someone to do work for me. I've also had numerous experiences where I have to do ridiculous repair work to clean up the "professional" work.

I also have some possessions with much less practical value than an expensive tool. If you can afford it and you want it, then what else is money for?

I can relate to that ....and some of it's just from seeing the quality of work performed with others hired the work out. The way I see it quality tools (if cared for) are basically an investment that has utility beyond just the storing of monetary value.

Unless "everyone" pays your bills, it's really none of their business. If you have $2000 to spare, and you want to spend it in a certain way, then you deserve it. Sometimes you have to buy something just because you want it. I spend my money pretty much how I want to, and except for Sharn Jean, the rest can go butt a stump. I have a 1960 Chevy sitting in the shop, and all it does is sit there and look nice. It doesn't make me a dime.

I agree, your money, your choice. Just don't try to justify it. Just do it. No worries.

Stupid? No.

But begs the question, are you ever going to get $2000 worth of work out of it? Or $2000 worth of enjoyment out of it?

Def. enjoyment :) Cant wait to replace my whole house filter and water tank.

I think that's going to depend on what local plumbing outfits charge per hour ...if it's $50-$100/hr (like it tends to be in my locality) it wouldn't take many hours to pay off buying the tool in savings.

I once bought a 'toehoe' (towable back hoe) and paid $1000.
It earned its keep while I owned it and just last year sold it for $1000.
The buyer earned over $3K with it and he last month sold it for $1200. (inflation?)

\NO, if a tool earns $'s then U are not stupid.
It is all about RIO, (return on investment)

I've spent $200 to drill 8 holes. I've spent $1000 for a vacuum gauge. They are all items that I felt were worthwhile. I'm in the camp of it's your money, you don't have to justify how you spend it.

LOL, I like to own my own tools.
So I have a ton of $$'s worth plus I like bargains so I have many.

I have bought a lot of expensive tools.

If I need it, and can I justify spending the money, I do it.

That being said, I solder my copper fittings. I'm good at soldering, (practice, practice, practice). And, on top of the initial investment in the tool, the press fittings are much more expensive.

If I was doing big jobs, I probably could justify a Propress. It certainly is easier, and faster.

Another + 1 for you and your tool.

When the job is complete, I'd hang it on the wall a long with firearms.

I just finished a 2 year project for the upstairs ( I'm old and slow, very slow) installing a 7' x 5' metal containment pan for the new water heater, new whole house filter, new pressure tank, and replaced all of the plumbing and valves to PEX pipe with copper ring crimp style fittings.

The existing piping was "gray poly butyl" (not sure of the spelling, but it's been outlawed for quite a while) and the WH and PT was just sitting on OSB wood flooring on the second floor.

Any way I purchased a PEX a 1" combo tool kit, then Purchased and additional 1/2" / 3/4" PEX tool so I didn't have to change out the different size dies, and lots of valves, fittings, and 100' rolls 1/2", 3/4", and 1" red and blue colored PEX pipe.

Let me say I am NOT A PLUMBER, not even close, but with great luck, I did not have a leak (I must of check each crimp about 4 to 6 times since my memory is fading).

Over the next 2 years or so, I plan on replacing the rest of the plumbing on the ground floor (an addition of a master bedroom has copper pipe which I have not decided to change out or just leave it in place.

Enjoy your new tool,

KC
