On the subject of Walmart hatchets my kid bought me one for xmas he was splitting kindling with it and a three inch chunk of the heel snapped off. Nice chineeseum temper. On the Pro Press I use one in work all the time and my boss says I can have all the fittings I wan't for free but I still sweat my own stuff home . That thing is so G.D. heavy I told my boss the only way I would bring it home is if he carried it for me then left it there permenatly. As far as spending 2 k on a tool it don,t take long to save that in plumber labor cost if you cant solder. Probabally saved that on your first job . Do your self a favor and don't lend it out . If they didn't pay for the tool they don't care about it . The Propress does not take kindly to be banged around and dropped.:drink:

I bought a force logic press tool for copper pipe and PEX fittings. When they installed my new Furnace they used Viega Crimp fittings and no solder joints. Same thing when they added heat to my office in the basement-all press fittings. I like to be able to fix just about anything in my home and with out the tool I felt helpless. I do have the solder kit but I am not good with soldering.

So I bought the tool, first I will be using it to replace all the defective valves in my home and adding a new water tank -both are 30 year old setups - and whole house filter that is wifi capable. I dont think Im crazy...just like to be independent.

I purchased the $1100 in tools I needed to install my own heat pump after everybody quoted me $5500-8000 like they were doing me a favor plus the sparky costs. So now I have the flaring tools, the manifolds, the vacuum pump, the cylinder of nitrogen for pulling pressure testing as well as drying out the refrigerant lines and can pop in a heat pump any time I want.

I fit in this category also. I bought the heat pump mini-split and all the tools to install it for about $2k when all the quotes just for installation was $4 to 5k.

I was talking last weekend to a guy that does failure analysis for a living.. they studied a bunch of pex failures about 10 years ago.. pipe itself was failing along with connectors and connection methods. He didn't scare me bad enough to cancel my pex project though.. I think the expansion tool you are talking about uses Pex A type pipe so just need to make sure to get right type..

I never considered soldering copper that big a deal. But I have very little experience. Maybe done 50 joints.
None ever failed. Hate plumbing but too cheap to hire a plumber for simple stuff like that.

Clean both surfaces, flux, apply heat, place solder on opposite side of heat, watch solder suck in, wipe, done.

None of us can answer your question as one error in judgement does not make someone stupid. Beware of those who say it is your money and spend it as you wish. Very true....but it a nice way of saying...not a good investment. Enablers tend to support eachother. On the side, your friends may just be envious. YOU KNOW THE ANSWER
