I suspect there are just a lot of keyboard kowboys and bloviating business men throwing those numbers around.

Facebook is full of posers.
hourly machine rate is not the same as quote for a pipe install. if you are doing everything other then trenching for free you are not thinking

I bought my cat when the last recession hit in 2009. The machine had 250 hours and the guy was desperate to get out from under the payments.

I got it for 18k. At that price I don't mind if it sits for long stretches of time.

Be patient, the pain is coming.

We picked up our little 2013 bobcat 324 for around 13k shortly after the covid scare started. Had around 1000 hours on it. So far only breakdown was a bad battery. I'm happy

I'd like something bigger although not in the market for one but still periodically look at used stuff.

I'll keep the 324 and just take my time on projects and deal with it.

Common sense works best, always has, always will.

A number of years ago I bought a 6K hour KX121 for something like 16,500. I sold it last year for 24K. Didn't think I would want another one but ended up buying a new Bobcat E35 last week. I have about 15 hours in the seat as of now.. Much lighter and weaker than the 121..But better comfort and the AC sure is nice.

I’ll bet that set you back more than 24 k.

Surprised you say it's "much lighter and weaker"

It's only a 3.5 ton vs a 4 ton machine.

I really don't think there is a ton of difference between the 3.5t and 5t machines. Only reach and lift power. But bucket breakout and arm digging force is not a remarkable difference. So you noticing one only going from 4t down to 3.5t is surprising

The kx121 lists 8700# / 3700# for bucket/arm force.

The E35 is 7200# bucket but more arm force at 4600# or so.

Both quite capable. I guess you may notice a few more feet reach and a little more lift power with the Kubota.

I bought a bobcat 334. Also 3.5 class machine. I really wanted a 4 ton Machine. ~9000# which is max for a 12k trailer. But too few mfgs make them. Most skip from 3.5 to 5t.

Having ran many......I personally really don't notice much difference til you hit the 8-ton class.

The 121 actual weight is more like 4.5 tons. A 1 ton difference isn’t insignificant when it’s over 20 percent of the total weight. Also the 121 was rated at 42 hp where the e35 is rated at 25 hp to avoid emissions. The e35 was also available at 33hp but I’m guessing most buyers get the 25 hp one. The 35 series kubota is also 25 hp where the 40 series gets a pretty big boost to 40 hp. I’ve never ran a 3.5 ton class machine but I’m guessing you would experience a pretty big difference in the hydraulic speed with such a big difference in engine power. One of my friends used to own a 3.5 ton bobcat although it was probably a early 2000s model, I don’t know exactly. I never ran it but he has used my KX-040 and says the 40 is drastically stronger.

The zero turn is a big difference in weight location. The KX has a big counter weight that hung off the back so lifting rocks, stumps etc.. was much more stable. Also feel like the thumb clamping force was much stronger in the Kubota.

Yeah those comments above are what I was kind of thinking as well. It’s kind of crazy though none of the dealers have any excavators on the lot hardly. Got lucky and found one dealer with one excavator that just came in. I priced it out, a bobcat E 20 which is just over a 2 ton excavator after-tax with two buckets and financing fees built in it was around $36,000. I keep finding guys asking around 25,000 for eight year old machines with close to 2000 hours.
For 25 to 36,000 i’ve got a lot of options. 15 to 20k. not so much. I’m just not ready to commit to $36,000.
2,000hrs isnt high hours. It's 20hrs every month.

I have a 1990 kubota kh41 (about a 3,500lb machine) I bought with 1400hrs and a auger attachment for $8500 in 2019. It's been a good machine and I believe I just hit 2,000hrs. Yes this machine only had 5hrs put on every month for the last 33yrs but it was a home owner machine and still is.

Maybe you should look away from dealers?
