Excavator v. Skid Steer for Hobby Farmer?

Hmmmm

I wonder if there’s a market for a tracked, compact telehandler?
Probably already one out there.

How about one of these. They look useful.

This is going on your MUST HAVE List!

Now if we could get a telehandler boom on one of these, life would be good.

Xfaxman,

That is what I thought a few years ago when I first saw it.
But the V417 is still doing what I need a machine to do after 12 years of using and abusing it. :giggle:

Evidently you have never owned or operated a compact telehandler.

1. It is not harder to trailer. There are skid steers that are bigger and heavier than my V417.

2. With 4 wheel steer it is very easy to maneuver in tighter spaces.

3. I can see exactly what and how I am engaging a material (ground, dirt pile, trees, etc).

You are right, they will likely never replace a skid steer.
There will always be a market for skid steers. I have used a compact track loader.

For me a compact telehandler works better (y)

1. Many skid steers are under the CDL weight limit. Kubota SVL 75 is 9300 lbs, the v419 telehandler is 11000. That makes a huge difference. 11000lbs puts most into CDL territory. Still a valid point.

2. Sorry but a telehandler cant turn a 360 in place...no comparison. However I do agree a telehandler of your size is better than a tractor.

3. I sat in a v419 with a bucket..I could not see the front bottom corners with the bucket on the ground. Maybe I was doing something wrong. Its the same issue with a tractor.

Then you could argue back & forth all day long. A skid steer can’t stack bales as high, can’t be used for higher reach construction work and doesn’t have the ground clearance and may not have the lifting capacity of the telehandler.
It also doesn’t have the reach of the telehandler when you need to push a brush mower under low tree branches, etc.

The extra 1700lbs of the tele also helps with stability.

I can see where the compact tele would be more advantageous for the farmer, roofer, framing carpenter and the skid more advantageous for the excavator, landscaper.

I see a tracked tele skid, maybe a little bigger than the JCB as a GREAT all around machine. 74HP is a little small and the lift capacity fully reached is a little light. Would prefer a 90+ HP machine with a 2000lb lift capacity fully extended. It would give the ability to handle an 8’ HF brush mower, then be able to stack square bales like Xfaxman’s machine. The issue with bigger than 74HP is DEF fluid, but I guess we are all stuck with that.

No one said a skid steer could replace a telehandler. The opposite was said and thats the reason I posted my comments. I completely agree telehandlers are amazing machines.
