Expensive NH Air Filters: Better Solution?

I'd 2nd that. You can screw things up by changing the air restriction on any engine. What you save on filters you might be giving back on fuel econ or engine life. Proceed cautiously, but those filter prices are ridiculous, I agree!

Boomerang1,

I have yet to replace the inner filter. That one is not a big deal. But replacing the outer filter every 20 hrs. is. Let's see that's $1.75/hr. So I've been doing my best to keep it blown out best I can, but it's a real hassle. I've got 110 hours on my tractor and on my 4th filter.

I didn't post on this forum so somebody could tell me what I should be able to afford. You don't know my situation. It might be that the only way I was ever able to afford my tractor; was by looking at ways to save money. Besides, I do a lot of volunteer work with my tractor, so keeping my operating costs low allows me to do more.

I'd be cautious about your future postings and consider the forum rules; "do not insult or deliberately offend other users".

"I didn't post on this forum so somebody could tell me what I should be able to afford."

I didn't find Boomerang1's "Opinion" offensive.. you should read his post.. he said "a person".. he did not say "you".

Your reply seems pretty antagonistic.. maybe you should take your own advice.

Can you post a picture of your dirty filter? I can't think of anything you can do with a tractor that would require you to change filters so often. Just cause the filter starts to look dirty doesn't mean it has lost its effectiveness.

Donalddson, Racor, and Baldwin make several of the OEM filters or make OEM filter replacements for more configurations than anyone else. You might want to call or chekc their web stes for more info. ALso, the above keep a list of those requesting specific replacement filters that they currently don't manufacture. After so many requests, like a market survey, they could add them to their offering.

Go to the junkyard and take your pick of filter boxes. If you have the time find a few you like and go to the parts store and see how much each filter cost. The filters for automotive applications can get very exspensive not limited to $20 a filter.

Cmuncy,

I did a little searching and found something called a Donaldson Top Spin pre-filter. Here's what it looks like; it's a PDF file: Top Spin .

Anybody seen these in use? Just wondering how functional it really will be. Don't know if the air would be getting sucked in fast enough for it to work as intended. They're about $75 for the size to fit my tractor.

According to the specs on this pre-filter it requires 90-200 CFM for it to operate correctly. So if my engine is 135.2 cu. in. in size running at 1000 RPM would give me 135,200 cu in. 1728 cu. in. = 1 cu. ft. So I think that would be around 78 CFM with my tractor running at 1000 RPM. Doesn't meet the minimum. I guess this device won't work.

Does my figuring sound right? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Have you tried looking for a foam cover for the pre-filter, like described above?

I've used a foam cover as a pre-filter for years -- washing it, and oiling it lightly with motor oil -- it doesn't necessariily have to be expensive filter oil.

They extend the life of a regular paper filter by 5 to 10 times...

Thank you for letting me know that your posted file is a pdf file. Every time I try to open a pdf file my computer hangs and I have to re boot. I have tried numerous times to fix the problem but with out success. Many TBN threads have pdf files hidden in them and I get caught frequently.
