Greetings,

I was just going to start a pole building when I checked out a friend's Morton built on mono slab. I was impressed with the engineering and the speed with which it was erected. My friend said that his uninsulated building 42X48x14 1'eves, 2 big doors, skylights, was something like $15,000 plus slab. I thought wow! why do I want to build it myself?. I cancelled my posts until I could Get a price from Morton. This morning I got a ball park for 36X72X14, 10 3x4 windows 2 10x10 and 1 24x11 insulated, 6 sky lights, but no interior finish. $47,000. I think the other guys building was built a couple of years ago. Can anyone clue me in as to the details. I was thinking maybe $35,000.

That sounds pretty close for a Morton. If you want to save wait until they come out with their specials. If you can live with the dimensions and what you get with the base model that's the way to go. With Morton you will get one of the best buildings money can buy. But with the best you are going to pay for it.

1) My experience with them was very good.

2) I would estimate thier prices have risen about 5% since your friend had his built.

3) They have an awesome website (for a company that builds pole barns) and pay attention to it soon they should be announcing the Building Value Days (3 days in early feb.) which is supposed to be the cheapest time to sign-up.

4) They were narrowly the second highest bidder when I was looking for a smaller building the year before but after comparing actual buildings from different co's, I put together a plan (size and layout) and showed up during the BVD's and put a deposit down/

5) Dont be surprised to wait six months for a building.

6) My only gripe was the salesman's lack of salesmanship, maybe its the way they are trained but this fellow had over 25Yrs in and seemed so uninterested in telling me about some extra items that they offered.

good luck, steve

Your friend got a heck of a deal for a building that size for $15K. I priced a 30'x40' from Morton 3 years ago and they quoted me about $25K. That did include extended eaves, insulation, and some other extras. I was really impressed with their quality. But I bought a bolt-up prefab metal building for less than $10K and put it up myself.

I built a bunch of fence on a farm when they were putting up some Morton sheds and shops.

They knocked my socks off they were so kewel to watch work.

First was the delivery. An eighteen wheeler came in and parked. He disconnected from the trailer. Unfolded a set of forks and his truck became a forklift. He unloaded himself. I liked that.

Then they came in with the installation crew. Custom trailer hauling a custom tractor with everything they could possibly need. Tractor drills the holes, is a forklift for moving materials, and is the portable scaffolding too.

If I was going to have a building done by others and out of wood, I'd go with Morton for the quality and the experience of watching it done with the coolest tools and techniques.

I don't believe they are the low guy for price, but I have many here in our area and when I see them fixing 15 year old buildings under warrantee and the people are telling me they are there with no grief, that's a pole barn dealer! There barns are there billboards around here and more then once I've heard of some remarkable coverage the owners have had.

I almost went with Morton to build our 42x60 barn. But the salesman couldn't answer even the simplest of questions, and had a horrible time coming up with a price (he changed it 11 times and then couldn't even guarantee it was right). I finally got disgusted with his ineptitude and went elsewhere. It was a shame because I did like the construction and attention to detail that the Morton barns have. I'm happy with what I have, but I'll always wonder what it could have been.

I could not justify paying twice as much for a pole building just because Morton put it up. So I went with the low price company and I'm 100% satisfied.

I am now taking bids on a pole barn. I am after a 24x48x11 with one 16x9 garage door, 3 double pane windows, two 36" entry doors, four skylights and a end room 18x24 fully insulated and finished. The average price from the little guy is $24k. Morton is 33k. Both prices include 4" concrete plus a 6' apron on the garage door end. The Morton building looks to be built so much more solid with so many more features it seems like the way to go. The sales person I have been working with is very professional and knows what he is talking about. Fast calls back, quick quotes. I really like the idea of a fully professional crew and company getting the job done right. One of the big problems I ran into with the small builders is that they sent me contracts I would never sign. Totally giving up all my rights, no warranty and they wanted 50% down NOW ! That is a lot of money on a contract that excuses them for not being able to finish the building for any reason. Especially considering they can not get to it for six months. The one guy I liked best refused to talk to me after I asked him if he had workman's comp ! /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif Morton seems a lot more reasonable with 10% down. I guess I am just more confident trusting the pro's Vs the small town builder that will probably take all summer to finish my barn. Dave

Dave,
I think there is a lot of value in the Morton System besides just the quality of construction. The fact that they do everything the same way including methods and machinery, along with their deadline system makes me believe that they could be headache free. If I'm paying to have it done, all I want to do is write the check!
