Exploding Tire Kills 8yr old boy

....FIFTY (50) years ago,..we made the very same predictions about those very dangerous "split-rims",..... and ho-hum,.. fifty years later we still read about a tragedy here and there. Fifty years from now what? .... same tragedies?

Check the files here on TBN,..you'll find a few more. It is a shame, but nothing is being done about it,.. (to my knowledge?)

25 years ago on a hot afternoon I heard an explosion, windows shook and things fell from the window sill. I went to investigate and the front tire from a car I had for sale had exploded. It was a small car with probably a 13 or 14 inch tire.

If the son was inside, he would still be alive, but it could have just as easily been one of the adults killed. The moral of this story is to use a cage. Do it safely or have someone else do it. Can't imagine living with the memory of losing a child in front of your eyes. So sad.

I was in a garage when a bus tire went off in a cage, no one was injured. It sounded like a 16 inch shell.

... 37-year-old Donald Jackson and another man were working on a tractor-trailer tire in a shed on Jackson's property and were putting air in it to try to find a leak when it blew up.

...the blast struck 8-year-old Kegan D. Jackson, throwing him several feet...

It's hard to say exactly what happened; several different scenarios are possible but I would not be surprised that this was the result of a "zipper failure". The air blast alone would be enough to cause a fatality.Here's a site about tire blowouts and explosions.

It's always a tragedy when there is an injury/fatality to someone just trying to get a job done and not doing anything that would strike anyone as particularly dangerous, but when it's an innocent bystander and especially a child, the tragedy is all that much worse.

The Christmas season for this family will be one of grief, pain and sadness forever and they will always be reminded of it by all the yearly holiday revelry. My heart goes out to them.

Oh man, this makes my heart hurt. I just can't imagine the grief and pain that the family is going through.

I broke my hand on a drop center rim when it exploded all it takes is one second of distraction. and never exceed the max pressure on tire to seat bead.

This is terrible.

Can you guys with experience teach those of us without what not to do when dealing with the basics - inflation, flats, etc??? Blowouts do cross my mind when I'm topping something up (about the max extent of my tire fixin'), and I've taken care of 2 guys that had it happen to them, but I don't know what causes them, or what are the common mistakes.
