extending my new hydraulic cyllinder. question

i have a home made grapple question. i have a new 2" diameter by 8" push hydraulic cylinder. i want to measure the opening distance of my grapple before i install the hydraulic lines. question:? can i extend the hydraulic ram cylinder with out the hydraulic lines attatched? in other words, if i open the in/out ports, can i pull the cylinder out with out damage? thank you for any thoughts and help. mark

That is why I said in his other post oil will probably shoot out several feet. When they finally move they tend to move fast.

You can probably pull it by hand. It would be easier to just hook it up and use the oil to push it out.

There should be specs on the cylinder, no?
Or, hook it up as already suggested.

Better be extremely cautious with air. It wouldn't be my first choice on how to do it

tie one end to something that won't move. Put a bar through the other end to use a a handle and pull like a bugger.
