3-Point Hitch Extending the reach of a bush hog

If someone in the neighborhood has a larger tractor, boom flail might work ok.

Hi all,

I have a bit of a issue. I have a LP QuickHitch attachment and use it with all of my implements including a 48 inch bush hog. This works well for most of my land, but I have a issue with our dam and pond. Our access road to our neighboorhood goes over the dam, and on the pond side there is a steep 12 to 20 foot slope down to the edge of our pond. I can put the tractor on the dam road, and can shuffle the tractor sidewase on the road to get the bush hog down the dam face and bush hog the upper half of the dam face. The problem is that I can't reach far enough down the dam without putting the tractor on the steep face of the dam. Frankly, I'm afraid of flipping the tractor on such a steep slope.

Has anyone heard of extensions that I could put into the 3 point hitch and PTO so that the bush-hog has a longer reach?

Other then that, my other choice is a weed wacker.

Does the tractor have a HST transmission? If so I think youve got it made, esp if you mount the BH direct so its closer to the tractor. Your dam face is probably about 25 degree. The tractor wont flip, but youll probably have to add some front weight to keep the front down. The hst will give you the fine control you need to be safe. Doing it with a gear tractor is quite challenging/dangerous.

I agree with SPYDERLK, I do this all the time with our L5030 and M8540. I really prefer the HST, but can manage it with the Hydraulic Shuttle Shift and good brakes. I use my FEL for counter balance and have done this for over thirty years on different tractors without any problems.

Out of curiosity, how "steep" of a slope are we talking about? 15 degrees, 20 degrees etc.

It's steep. I'll try to get some pictures for you. I'd estimate the steep end of the dam face at 30 to 40 degrees.

Also wanted to add, I brought this up with my Father in Law, that use to own a contruction business, use to be a tabacco farmer and has farmed for about 50 years. His reply was, "I'm not going to tell you to do it, and I'm not going to tell you not to do it." (on putting the tractor on the dam face to back the rotary cutter down to the lower brush).

Which I take as "don't do it".

Last time someone told me anything like that I ended up in a tracked skidsteer, buried in mud to the point that the tracks weren't visible anymore. I wish I had listened.....that was a bad day.
