3-Point Hitch Extending the reach of a bush hog

/ Extending the reach of a bush hog #31
Hi TrippleR,

It's steep. I'll try to get some pictures for you. I'd estimate the steep end of the dam face at 30 to 40 degrees.

Larry
That steep would be legendary. Are you able to walk up it in normal lug soled shoes, or are cleats and hand holds or a rope necessary? Normally, disturbed and re compacted earth is not over 28-30 because it takes some doing to render it stable over time. Pls measure and see.

Also wanted to add, I brought this up with my Father in Law, that use to own a contruction business, use to be a tabacco farmer and has farmed for about 50 years. His reply was, "I'm not going to tell you to do it, and I'm not going to tell you not to do it." (on putting the tractor on the dam face to back the rotary cutter down to the lower brush).

Which I take as "don't do it".

Then I would defer to him. What I can do with my tractors certainly doesn't mean another tractor will do it. I won't try some stuff my sons do and that is on the same tractors.

There are a lot of considerations most importantly the type of tractor and degree of slope, but you can't discount experience in that type of terrain. I grew up as a flat land farmer and now operate mostly in the hills and it has taken me a lot of years to get close to comfortable on some of these slopes.

Walking up the steep part of the slope is challenging. I can do it without assistance of a rope, but if I have a hard tonged rake I'll swing that into the uphill side to grip the slope and then pull myself up it.

My father in law created the dam with a bulldozer back when he was part owner of a construction company, so he could compact it with that. Tract'd bulldozers can get on quite steep slopes that I would never dream of doing on a wheel'd tractor.

A measurement of the slope would tell. If under 30 a HST tractor would pull it with AGs [or others if dry]. My dam face is 27. I have another slope thats 30. The BX will go up and down either and will do the 27 cross slope with belly mower.
