I have come across a small for lift boom that I am going to configure to hook up to the back of my BX24. I don't plan to lift the moon, but for the price ($300) I think this will be more flexible an option than using adhoc forks on either the FEL or using the 3-point hitch especially since the mast would be right next to the rear tires. Given that I was going to spend $150 on a set of old fork lift forks, $300 seemed like a good deal for the forks and the frame.

Since the rest of the cylinders are double acting (returning as much fluid as they use), I am worried (convinced) that the single acting lift compound cylinder will drain my tank.

If possible, I can either use a auxiliary tank (but I don't have any clue on how it would work without screwing up the tractor's HD level)? Or the other option is to use a remote HD power pack (I already have one) and simply use the hydraulics off of that and simply use the tractor for movement.

Any ideas?

Thanks Paul

I think I'd use the remote power pack. The reservoir on our tractors have a limited capacity and could run dry, or just low, trying to fill a large single acting cylinder. With the remote power pack you could probably use any size reservoir you need.

Would this be electric, or perhaps PTO driven?

Gary- The remote unit holds 5+ gallons and is powered by a 4-stroke 13hp Honda engine. That would seem to be the simplest method of doing this as well as adding some counterweight because it would be carried in the FEL.

So the powerpack goes in the FEL. And the hoses and valve are located at the operators position?

The power pack is simply the tank with the engine and pump mounted on top with a set of 20' hoses. It gets used for lots of different things. In this case, the hoses would run to a valve(s) mounted somewhere either on or near the fork lift mast. From the valve, short hoses would connect to the ram.

When I get some time, I am planning on taking the plasma cutter to my FEL bucket and fabricating a quick release type mechanism. Once I do that, I may mount a quick connect mount to the side of the power pack so it doesn't get beat up sitting in the FEL. The tank on the power pack is made of 1/4" 12"x12" square tubing about 24" long (quite heavy) so it is next to impossible to lift it without some sort of mechanical device.

I've seen the electric units used on dump trailer and the like, but never saw an engine powered unit before.

Looking at the price they must really be proud of them.

I guess it could power any type of hydraulic device witin it's power range. Do you have additional uses planned for the one you built?

And we need pictures too!

The units are basically log splitters without the log splitter!

I am rebuilding a house and the unit is under about 6 feet of "stuff" piled in the garage. To build one is under a grand and the power @ over 7 gpm is amazing. You can get things like hydraulic break hammers, water pumps and other cool stuff for this type of unit. Right now I use it exclusively for my log splitter - but I did not see too much point in having that be the only thing to use the pump for.

If you can find the parts, it is a fun project

- 5+ HP motor
- single or 2 stage hydraulic pump
- in line filter
- scrap steel to make the tank
- misc hydraulic fittings

Once I dig it out, I will post some pics

Just install a double acting cylinder on your new lift instead of a single acting cylinder that usually use on fork lift rig.
When you will move the valve to go up, the piston in the cylinder will go up and the hydraulic fluid in the upper part of cylinder will go in your rear end of your BX so you won't mist any fluid.
You must use a double acting valve order wise you will over fill the rear end, because the hydraulic fluid won't go back in the cylinder and stay in the rear end.
You must install also flow control valve with a check valve on the lower port of your cylinder to regulate the speed on the way done. Free flow on the way up and control on the he is way down.
You can also modify your single acting cylinder by adding seal and a taped port at the end.

Skippy-

I never seriously considered a double acting cylinder because the existing cylinder is a telescoping cylinder (I believe mine has 3 stages). I guess I could try to figure out how high it would go with a single section cylinder .... so many options!
