Ford will sell a bunch of the f150 diesels. They had to keep up with the 1/2 ton 1500 ram diesel.Bet chevy will be next.

I'll bet you are right coobie

I don't buy their reasoning for availability ONLY in the high end models. Mistake in my opinion. I wonder how many Ecoboost customers will switch over, from the 3.5? They quoted a $4000 jump over the 2.7, but didn't quote vs the 3.5. Actually am a bit surprised since many Ford owners like to brag that Ford didn't need a diesel since they had the Ecoboost.

Glad they did it. Now it's GM's turn.

It HAS to be economics of using a pre-existing engine, but I have always felt a 4.0 diesel would be ideal for a 1/2 ton TOWING truck. Something in the 275hp-500lb tq range. A small inline 6 would be preferable.

One trend I do NOT like on the newer trucks is tucking the engine so far under the dash that major work is an automatic body removal. I wonder how long they will go before adding an exhaust brake, even using the VGT? 11,000lbs is a lot of load to use only engine braking. I know because I added a turbo brake to my Duramax after towing without one. Night and day difference. I know they CLAIM the engine is enough, but I disagree, unless you like shifting up and down a lot, and using the service brakes.

Still glad they did it. GM needs one in the Sierra line. The little Colorado 4 banger just does not compare to this or the Ram offering.

I like the 2000lb payload with the diesel. It might TRULY be a 1/2 ton that can tow a light 5th wheel. Ram needs to up it's payload on the 1500 to compete. Glad another diesel is in the mix.

Looks like the numbers are in line with the 2.7 Ecoboost, but will cost you $4,000 more. The benefits will be higher payload and lowing than the smaller Ecoboost, and higher MPGs than the bigger Ecoboost. It will fit the need for some, but not most. 5% take rate means they know this going in.

You might be right, but my guess is one of the Eco Boost options will go bye bye. I bet it's the 3.5.

$2,400 premium over the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6. Fleet customers only will be able to order the engine on XL and XLT SuperCab or SuperCrew cabs with 6.5- or 8.0-foot beds (fleet pricing wasn’t shared).

I'd love to get a diesel in a 1/2 ton although I'm hesitant based on the horror stories I hear from some around here that own the newer diesels with all the emissions garbage. 4 figure repair bills are not uncommon. My last diesel was pre-emissions and I loved that thing.

Mine is an '06 and has some, but not the regen crap. Hopefully they will get it squared away soon like they did for gas engines. Took them about 15-20 yrs but seems like very few issues any more.

Happy they are doing it, shame they don't offer it in the lower trims. If they had done the same with the Dodge we probably wouldn't have gotten the EcoDiesel.

30MPG sounds about right, we get ~28 right now which is pretty awesome for a truck with reasonable towing capabilities.

If I ever go diesel, it will be a Cummins powered Ram - after buying a Hemi Ram I am sold on Dodge.

Seems these smaller diesels are not much cheaper than an Hd.

I am not really a Ford fan, but I highly doubt the 3.5 ecoboost gasser will be phased out anytime soon. Ford just totally clean slate redesigned the 3.5 eco in 2017 so much so that it shares very little in common with the 1st generation 3.5 eco other than the 3.5 liter displacement size. If they were thinking about phasing it out they would have likely kept the previous version of it around 2 more years more instead of totally redoing it.

More articles and rumors about Ford eventually dropping the V8 gasser in trucks than anything else. I think that is more likely than dropping the 3.5 eco IMOP and also think that it would be a mistake by Ford to ever drop the V8,

You sure about that? We paid ~28k for our crew cab EcoDiesel, last I looked at the 2500 they were in the 40k range before adding a diesel.

That's where I'm at. I have the 94 F-250 7.3 Turbo IDI. No emissions, no electronics...It's said about this truck it'll never get there first, but it will ALWAYS get there.

That has more to do with the radiator cap failing to hold 15 psi. Ford's ratcheting cap which now has been redesigned was buggy.

Even with the expanding universe why does a "1/2 ton" need to have a 1 ton payload?

My question is how long do you think it will be until the "fleet" bought will trickle down to the consumer level in the used market?

I've an '88 E350 7.3 non turbo, It was bought for a "fleet" but then returned. I had a conversion package put on and it was an EXCELLENT travel van for my 4 kids and SWMBO.
Need to get it back in service.
