F250 5.4 gas mileage

I have a f150 with the 5.4 xcab with 3.73 limited slip wit a/t, 5.4 motor. Summer time 15-15.5 mpg. Winter between 11 and 13 mpg depending if i have the plow on. Mostly highway driving. The gas milage is terrible but I just ordered a 2007 exactly the same. The reason i didn't switch to a chevy (supposed to be better milage) is that to change the plow over from a Ford to a Chevy is about $2000 and I know the ford pulls the 16' trailer with the tc30, bucket and bush hog like it's not even there. Don't know if the chevy can claim that. The dodge is not even a consideration, bad milage and even worse front ends. Tires are bald in 10,000 miles and the trucks pull to one side or another after about a month. Toyota and Nissan have come a long way but, they recommend no plow and I don't think the towing capacities are there yet.

Have a 5 yr old Toyota Tundra V8, I think about 240 hp. I get close to 20 on trips and about 17 around home. Best truck I've ever owned, smooth, quiet, and responsive. They are putting much bigger engines in them now, I guess to compete with some of the Fords and Chevys as far as towing capabilities.

Thanks to everyone for their input. I guess the 12-14 mpg range on the 5.4 Super Duty is about typical. I will have to wait and see if the programmer in the "ecomony" setting helps any with the mileage. I guess the really cold weather (10-15) can also effect mileage. It seems like with all the technology available, the manufacturers could come up with something that would provide more economy in a gas engine.

Park it inside so it starts out warm, never let it idle, fill the tires to listed max, switch every fluid to synthetic, change the air filters 2x as often as listed, add a bed cover, put a grill cover on so it heats up fully quickly and drive like an old lady on the way to church with a cop behind you. Do all that and you can add an easy 1 mpg maybe 2.

Hey, it's a big heavy truck.

My '04 F150 4x4 5.4 gets 15 on a really good day normal 13-14. I did gain alot of hp and about one mpg with the airaid cold air intake and 3" cat back exhaust and flowmaster 70. The programmer didn't do much to mileage but did boost hp alittle and really firmed up the trans.

My 2001 Expedition 5.4 gets 11-14 US mpg in mixed driving in this freakin' cold spell (down to -41C a few d ago, -32C right now). In summer towing my boat (3500 lb total load) it gets 15 hwy, max ever was ~18.5 pure summer hwy, not towing. I put a K&N Filtercharger kit on it, no change to milage. I now changed the filter itself to Amsoil 's nanofibre replacement filter but kept the rest of the Filtercharger system. No change. I run Amsoil synthetic engine oil and ATF, factory synthetic diff. fluid. This summer I hope to install a cat back exhaust. Yup, the milage sucks......

I have a 02 F150 5.4 3.31 gears and a 06 F150 5.4 3.73 gears, the 02 will get 18/19 and the 06 16/17 on highway easy driving. Both have plenty of power for a load, trailers or etc. but mileage does go way down. As low as 10 on the 02 with tall trailer and head wind.

I have a '03 F250 SC long bed with the 5.4 and I get on average 12 - 14 MPG. When towing (7k) I get 8 - 10 MPG.

I have 03 f-150 2wd with 3.55 gears, automatic, ext cab, ARE tonneau. Have not checked it lately but did check one tank on a trip to Canada. We stopped on the way up in Buffalo, NY and had a fair load with two people and no trailer. Got a shade over 19.
