I keep hearing people say the half tons today are more truck than a 3/4 ten years ago. I don't buy it. I think the ratings may be getting close due to the engine/transmission advancements, but there's a lot more to it than power.

Until 1/2t trucks come with heavier springs and 8 lug, full floating axles they will not be as tough as 3/4t trucks from whenever.

They have the power, brakes, and transmissions now to pull whatever.

My brother has a fleet of 8 trucks mixed with '10 and newer Ford 450s & 550s and Dodge 3500, 4500 and 5500. They pull close to the truck's rated capacities daily and none stand up. They have all had major mechanical failures prior to 70k miles.

While these trucks are marketed to work hard everyday their drive lines cannot take it, regardless of Dodge or Ford.

As for Chevy, he will not buy Chevy as the do not over a cab and chassis nor a 4500/5500.

I agree Peacock. My stepson-in-law has a 2011 GMC 1/2 ton crew cab short bed 4wd. But whenever he wants to pull anything, he comes and gets my 2003 crew cab short bed 2500 HD with Duramax.

Ok, so that is only 8 years difference, not 10. But there is really no comparison between the two for towing capability. The ratings (HP and Towing) might be close, but you feel a whole lot more secure with the bigger axles, heavier frame, suspension, etc.

That's my opinion anyway......

Obviously to be used interchangeably, however its very funny. I remember back in the day them saying this about bumpers. It brought me back .... Lol Interesting point on old 550 vs new 350....

Yes I actually owned fords. Worked out as good as anything else. One thing I will say is diesel Cummings or anything else has troubles with fuel injections and it cost a wack of money to fix.

I usually owned newer vehicles but Right now I am driving a 1978 one ton crew cab, 454 Holley carb. Hard on fuel but this thing hauled a lot of stuff for the previous owner and some for me and it cost me the least to run. No payments, and nothing that cannot be fix fixed by a back yard guy, parts are cheep.

I believe my 01 f250 would handle loads much better than my 78 f250. Even if it was like new. As for working on them in a driveway... both are simple, but require different knowledge.

Its the same hill and the same weight. I agree though. They probably figured out it perfoms better at high altitudes vs the competition. Chris

The big question I have is did the ram have the 68rfe or the Aisin in the test? The Aisin has an advantage for pulling I bet ford used the 68rfe equipped ram. Plus the Aisin equipped ram has 50 ftlbs more torque.

The Aisin has the following gears

1st 3.750
2nd 2.000
3rd 1.340
4th 1.000
5th .770
6th .630

The 68rfe has

1st 3.23
2nd 1.84
3rd 1.41
4th 1.00
5th .82
6th .63
