Best thing you can do is get a physical therapist to show you exercises to help strengthen your back and core. And then do those exercises religiously every day. I let myself go for a couple of years, put on extra weight, and got floored just stepping off a curb. Spasming back muscles feel like someone drove a knife in your back and twisted it. Specific exercises may be boring and time consuming; but so is sitting in a bed taking pain killers. And it's actually kind of cool that doing a set of pushups and situps before starting the workday can reduce the chances of you hurting yourself tossing a bale around.

Speaking of accupuncture was in the vet's office one day with my dog. A woman came in and asked if they did or knew of anyone that did accupuncture on an animal. Thought it was the craziest thing I had ever heard of till they told her a vet about 45 miles away did it.

HA, just last week I saw a bumper sticker on a car that said "dogs like accupuncture too". At the time I thought it was the craziest thing I'd ever heard of. Actually, I still do!!!

We have a local vet that does acupuncture. The folks swear by it, because the critters do very well!

Several years ago I was residing my house and I was up on a scaffold, 1 section (~6'). It was a ratty rental scaffold and I was standing there and I suddenly just started falling backward. I grabbed for the cross bars and it came off the studs right into my hand. That was my OH S%$T!!! moment. I landed flat on my back, knocking the wind out of me. I got up as quickly as I could and in a panic ran around to the door and had my daughter call 911. I ended up with a broken shoulder blade which the doctor said is the hardest bone in the body to break since it is wrapped completely in muscle. Ended up in a sling for 6 weeks and had to cancel our vacation to Canada and some great fishing. I went outside the next day to look at where I handed and my head landed about 12-15 inches from a concrete block. I broke out in a cold sweat when I saw that. I also realized that I had landed across some maple tree roots that were exposed and that is probably what caused the break.

Glad you're OK! Be Careful!!

Wow had you hit the concrete block or root with your head you might not be typing tonight.

After looking at the old shoes the other day I can see why I could not back up fast enough because the upper was separating from the sole at the heel and the tall grass wedged in that crack held my foot fast.

At day 10 I can tell I will recover in time if I do not do a repeat performance anytime soon. It is amazing how one moment all is well then the next moment is not. As the pain level decreases I need to get focused on loosing the middle third of the 75 pounds of extra fat. Thankfully I have not gained back any of the first 25 pounds. Getting to 175 should help my balance to be even better.

Thank for the concern of all.

About two weeks ago.....one of our dogs decided to go out in the woods at night. He came back with self inflicted acupuncture. Had about 35 porcupine quills in his face. I was able to remove about a dozen......the vet removed the rest after knocking him out. It wasn't cheap!

I'm a tad late, but I'm glad that you weren't seriously hurt. We are the same age, and I understand my limitations. I am still able to get things accomplished, but it takes me longer. I don't give up. That's LIFE. Best wishes.

Well this morning I decided to toss the old pair of shoes that I was wearing when I fell last week. In fact I had planned to do so for some time but due to the dew they got soaking wet every morning I was 'saving' my other better pairs.

Bad move on my part. I knew the soles were ran over and they were bad for me.

On close inspection the right heel/sole was separating from the rest of the right shoe. Perhaps when I was walking backwards and the fence moved easier than I expected it may have been the tall grass hung in the heel that was separating from the upper part of the shoe.

I can not be 100% sure this is what happened but expect the shoe hanging in the tall grass was at least a factor.

In tall grass I will now try to wear shoes good for walking forward or backwards. :)

When I slipped and fell ripping open my 5-week old knee replacement in 2/2010, which began my whole infection problem, I was wearing those crocks clogs with what minial tread there had been long ago worn off, and slipped on a couple of teaspoons of water from our cockatoo's water bowl which I was carrying to exchange for fresh. It was such a freakishly rare set of perfect storm kinda of circumstances that no one wanted to believe could've occurred. ...and it split my incision/scar down past its original length +to the bone and joint, + dislocated mykneecap, severing my quadriceps tendon, and I has slipped with the other leg!

Those shoes were sh**canned as soon as I got home from the hospital.

Glad you're moving better,
Thomas

Ourboxer got what appeared to be a neck spasm (in what short little neck the poor dear had) after jumping down off of our bed (don't even go there.....) and was just beside herself with pain, yelping whenever she tried to be her normal silly self.

The vet down the way isn't our regular vet, but our regular vet was still bein trained up in acupuncturing dogs, so we went to the vet down the road, and no more than a little neck rub and some teensy tiny needles that ole Schotzie didn't even feel, and the next day, she was back to normal. None of the give em some aspirin and they'll be finee BS.

Best most, efficient use of vet paymrnt ever.

Either that, or think everyone here is old!

Hi FG,

You have already submitted proof that you are not the "O" word.

My body is 54 y/o with the scars to prove it but my brain really seems to have gotten locked into an early twenties mode, causing me much difficulty because of the cognitive dissonance thereby created.

At least that's my story and I'm sticking to it!

When my Kelly was ill, we were trying everything we could think of to make her better. The wifey found a vet that did acupuncture and of the dog went to get stuck by needles. The acupuncture did not cure the dog but she seemed to feel a bit better. After our car accident, I had acupuncture done and it did take away the pain. It was not a cure but it helped kept me off serious pain meds.

I have heard so many stories of people slipping and falling while wearing Crocs. I read a Disney related forum from time to time and there are many stories of Croc caused falls at Disney. Seems like Crocs and water do not mix since the Crocs will slip very easily on wet, hard floors and I have read of some very scary falls. Though yours is the worse Croc Fall I have read about.

Ironically, it was just one of those wrong place, wrong time, things, because it was the foot on my good leg that slipped out and sideways causing me to fall and the post-op one was just not yet strong enough to catch me, and I was in the middle of the floor with nothing to grab to try and stop the slip.

I have slipped and nearly fallen a number of times since in other circumstances and was either able to fall safely without harm, or catch myself before I actually fell.

That all makes me cringe in pain just to read it! I'm glad that you are on the mend again.
