falling on ice

   / falling on ice #11
dalola- I was walking my dog in the dark by headlight. We've done this walk on ice many times before. Had that part failed farther along my intended walk and considering the injury and temperature at the time of the part failure I might not be posting now. Those crampons were less than a week old. I did not inspect them well enough.

Again thanks for the link and the pictures. I like the design and the pictures too.

BTW EnergeticSky is a Chinese company despite their website's vague Oregon address.

Best of luck with your recovery. Stay safe out there!

I was going to check the seed level in bird feeder when I hit a patch of black ice and down I went on blacktop drive. I got up and hobbled back into detached garage about the time world started spinning. Guess I hit my head pretty good also. After that passed I hobbled 30yd to house and was hurting like H#**.
Got to Dr. next day and found out I had fractured my pelvis...oh joy.
I'm 3 weeks into a 6 week no weight bearing on right side.
House bound with crutches now...
Ice skating rink up here in N Wisc with temp dropping to -30 with wind chill in -50 to -80 tomorrow.
Global warming strikes again!!

Based on recommendations in another thread I bought Yaktrax for both myself and my wife. I've size 13's and they barely fit my boots, but they fit. My prime concern for my self is ice for those occasions when everything, even the grass, glazes over. For my wife I just wanted something to stop her from going out on the ice.

These are basically heavy duty rubber bands with wire spring wrapped around, I don't expect them to hold up for any distance. They remind me of extremely cheap "tire chains". The one time I used them this year they worked fine.

The coil springs on the Yaktrax can get real slippery on smooth surfaces. Yaktrax does mention this on their website. Yaktrax also makes a non-coil "Diamond head" design that I have never seen nor used.

Lots of ice here :( so if it shine it get heavy dose grit upon it.

My in-laws are elderly, and not so stable on their feet anymore. We pick up bags of Prestone driveway heet on clearance towards the end of each winter. It keeps well in their shed. Melts ice very fast. We clear their driveway, then put this stuff down lightly (doesn't take much) just a path-wide strip down the drive from the garage to the mailbox, and on their sidewalk to the bird feeders. Really works well.

I use Stabilicers Maxx, and recently bought a set of Max2. They are pretty good on ice, with the Max2 being a little easier to put on as you get older. Have replaceable studs that you can change. A lot of brown truck and USPS folks wear them up here in the boonies. I put mine on this year after I had fallen for the third time. Finally dawned on me...... :)

How's everyone handling the ice problems. My wife just took another fall. Patches of Ice walking out the door to our vehicles are bad.

If you dont have the dexterity and time to shovel/chip it out, then just use CaCl or salt on those areas.

You can also do micro spikes, but they do take time to put on and take off once to the car.
