I went today to pick-up a new Polaris Ranger crew but when I arrived the one I supposed to get had miraculously sold but they had another that was $1,800 more. I of course left empty handed.

While I was there I noticed the Mule 4010 trans that also seated 4 people. It was a little cheaper but sales guy said it had a 3 year warranty versus 6 months on the Ranger.

I've never bought or owned a UTV but need one for general use....also moving people so they don't have to walk so far to the barn. I was going with the Polaris only because my neighbor has one and he has good things to say about it.

I'm trying to stay under the $12,000 price, is there anything else I should be looking at? Not going to be used on trails or 4 wheeling, just hauling post, gravel, hay, people, etc.

I know they are propbably both great but does one edge the other out?

Not as fast as the Mule or Polaris, but the Kubota RTV1100 can carry the load

I had a Polaris 800XP for "work" and a RZR for play and they were fun but surely not worth the money. I got an old pickup truck 4 years ago with a plow for $3500 and it is a lot better than a UTV...,heat and AC, wipers, washers, good sized bed and I can use it on the road to haul stuff and serve as another vehicle. Once I got the beater truck, I hardly ever used the 800XP so I sold it and the RZR this year and bought a used Jeep to play with and ride trails. I looked at adding a dump bed (about $2000) to the pickup but hard to justify as I have a tractor.

If you want to buy a toy, go for it. If you have a tractor and a pickup, your work needs are covered...well they are for me. I would never buy another UTV.

For light jobs and easily moving people around......golf cars work great. Dad uses them to haul everything with it that he can carry...yes, I'm sure he hauled WAY too much weight.

UTV's are really helpful on a large farm. My sister uses here Gator several times per day getting to and from the barns, moving some things around and such, if you have buildings several hundred yards away from your house, have livestock they are very useful machines in the utility units anyway, the RAZR type machines are for fun..

If I had use for one I would look at Honda and probably the NH unit, it's a big one and would carry more but I don't know if they are reliable or not, either way I would buy one of the larger units.

The Kubota is the way to go for a work rig, all done with Polaris and belts breaking. Everything happens for a reason I guess !

Thanks for the input, it will most likely fall into the getting to the two barns and back as they are several hundred yards away. I also want to use it for minor stuff around the property and will certainly need the dump bed.

This is our first farm (oh boy) but we are excited and can't wait to enjoy this lifestyle....although a few folks have told me lately that the only people who want a farm are the one's that have never owned one haha.

I have a ranger 800 , not really that happy with it . They have lots of issues including overheating. The hondas and kawasakis get alot of good reviews.

Grew up on a farm, I loved it, it's a good life. The UTV will serve you well. My sisters Gator gets the job done for her on her horse farm in FL, I'm sure you will get more use out of a UTV than most people do that buy them for recreation. I think with you're application you will find it to be of the utmost use and will probably depend on it more than you're other equipment, I know she does.. Good luck.. And ya, Kubota is a good one as well.

My Kubota RTV is a mini diesel 4wd ton dump truck. For farm work it has very few peers. Polaris doesn't offer one.
