Does anyone know which direction the bolt turns to come off that holds the steering arm. (before I get too aggressive and while it is soaking in liquid wrench)

Ok it soaked and it was a fooler - off - clockwise.

Now the next problem. the steering arm will not slide down past where the bolt was holding it. Any suggestions?

If I remember correctly, that is a tapered shaft. If you have a pickle fork, or some way to pry down on the arm, on the shoulder where it goes around the shaft (shouldn't take much). A mechanics type pry bar, or smaller rolling heel type pry bar would work well. Then run the castle nut back on, with the castellated part up, flush with the end of the shaft, so as not to bugger the threads. Then a nice sharp rap with a brass hammer, or hammer, with a hardwood block, on the end of the shaft, and it should drop off.

That's one of those jobs where it's nice to have a helper, or 4 hands...

I tried to get a puller to pull it out but I could get the axel only down 3" past the bolt and the pullers I have need 5".

So now I either find a shorter puller or remove the U bolt under the tractor that is holding the axel.

How hard is it to remove the U bolt? The access to the top of the bolts looks like a nightmare.

It's been at least 35 years since I dropped the axle on the one I had at the time, and don't really recall. But I do believe I had the radiator off, so access would have been a lot easier. I suspect you'll have to do the same, if you don't have a bar of some sort to get a bit of a pry on it, and use a puller.

Ok, going to wrap this up. The steering arm does not need replacing with the new tie rods. Below is a pic of the new and old tie rod ends and you can see the wear. Since the new ones are so much larger I put them in the steering arm and tried to pull them out and they are secure. Tomorrow I'll start the reconstruction. Thanks for all the help, It's always nice to know that there is someone here on TBN to help.

Wow, those are worn..!! Should make a big difference.

I think you'll find when you adjust the caps on the steering arm, it's pretty much like a wheel bearing. Snug it up, then back off until the slot matches the cotter pin hole. Too tight, and they will bind.
