I've got the DK-40 HST with an Igland 4001 PTO winch, from Finland. It is amazing, and would be PERFECT for your tractor. With a clamshell snatchblock I can double the pulling power to 8,000 pounds from 4,000.
There is nothing to date I haven't been able to pull, with maneuvering the tractor, block and winch and using the right amount of RPMs, and safety taken into consideration. I did snap off the original swedged cable end when one large tree hung up on a stump, but that's it as far as any breakage. One can dampen possible 'whiplash' from the winch cable by dropping a blanket or similar item over the cable in a particularly stressed pull, but that's a last resort in my opinion. Best be out of the way of the cable's path whenever it's under tension. Anything can happen.

4000 lbs of pull seemed a little light to be recommending for that size tractor. The Farmi 351 is over 7000 lbs without a block just for reference. So I looked up the specs for the Igland you mentioned. That winch has 4 tons of pull, or 8000 lbs without a block, so a doubling block will make that 16000lbs. Just FYI.

I also think 4000 is on the light side, unless you are only pulling smaller firewood logs.. Having to double line is time consuming and a PITA to do...

Does the cable ever get all tangled up on a logging winch? I know whatever I do I can't keep my harbor frieght 12000 lb. winch spooling straight.

99% of the time it operates trouble free.
On a couple of occasions the cable has got "stuck"/overlapped on the reel winch. This is probably from reeling in the cable without a load, then putting a load on the cable. I imagine the slack on the reel gets "out of order". Usually with a good hard tug it comes free, but there's been a couple times I've had to go find a tree, attach the cable and drive forward to give it a tug hard enough to get it out.

BTW. The gear ration of a winch also changes depending on how much cable is on the drum (i.e. the effective diameter of the drum (w/ cable) changes.)

A "recovery" winch has a different drum design than a "skidding" winch, so it's much LESS of a problem, although Coby is right, it does happen for the reasons he stated, but not often.

And that cannot be stressed ENOUGH. Guy was retrieving a car tow dolly that had become a one wheel tow dolly. Hook slipped when it was about 20 feet out. Came shooting back and almost went through the cab. I was about 10 feet to the side.

You absolutely WANT that protective screen on the winch!!

When skidding from the ground, you stand to the side, pulling a rope that goes to the winch. When you let go of the rope, the winch stops...

The Igland 4001 is an exelent winch, don't think any of the other manufacturers have a so complete range of winches as Igland has.

You're right, and thanks. I goofed on the lbs/tons value, duh.:confused3:

They are excellent winches. The local dealer I bought from keeps one 4001 as a stock item in front of their store at all times. That's how i found it. And I have their excellent log grapple, mod # GR-20.

I've really learned a lot bout logging winches from this topic. It's great to speak to others who have a winch, and learned its lessons. I'll be buying in the fall, most likely new. I priced the Wallenstein fx85 at Wallace tractor in Pa. I'd like to deal with Wallace because I've heard so much good about him. I spoke with Wallenstein and they told me the fx85 would be perfect for my tractor. Thanks to all who contributed.

Glad to hear that you're convinced. Now that I know how handy skidding winches are, I can't imagine not having one. Even if I was just cutting 4-5 cords a year, it'd be worth having one. When you get your winch, post some pics for us.

I'm doing a 100 cord harvest of aspen, and wouldn't think of doing it without a winch. The job will pay for it, and then I'll have it for a long time for other more selective logging and general cleanup/firewood. Being able to run one was part of the reasoning behind my buying a tractor.

I love the winch & skidding logs with it, but I have also found it invaluable for other uses. Moving a shed, pulling out small trees up to 6", roots & all. Pulling 2 trucks out of a ditch last winter, and pulling some boulders into place. For as Lon as I have had it, I am still amazed at what it will pull.

I want to point out something about my dads logging winch. The incidnet I described happed about 40 years ago with a very old at the time winch. That winch didnt have any of the modern type of safety devises of modern day winches, altho I havnt seen any real safety devises on the newer winches. They still will pull a tractor up a tree if you let them.

Key words!! " if you let them"

Like most EVERYTHING else, it's only as dangerous as the "operator" using it!

Yep, you gotta watch the tractor, not the log. If the tractor is staying planted, and the cable is still coming in, everything's all right. Also, no need to push the limits. Most of us aren't making a living skidding logs out of the woods, so no need to pull them all at once, or run the throttle higher than necessary. Things happen plenty fast at 300 PTO RPM.
