My owners manual said to use regular hydraulic oil in my Kubota.

I'm not adding anything, and I'm not spinning anything, and you were the one who started out with the "corrections" so you can't really point fingers at me for stating facts.

The substance commonly referred to as "gear oil" is different from the substance commonly referred to as "hydraulic transmission fluid" and suggesting otherwise isn't helpful to the OP, or anybody else.

As you said, they have different additive packages, which makes them different. In some applications either can be used. In some applications only one will be suitable. In some situations, substituting "gear oil" for "hydraulic transmission fluid" will lead to thousands of dollars worth of repairs.

I simply told him that some machines use "hydraulic transmission fluid" instead of "gear oil," and that he should check the manual. I find it hard to imagine how anybody could go wrong following that advice.

UTFs generally provide a level of gear protection described a GL-4. That makes those lubricants containing major additive systems such as HiTECH 8703 and Lubrizol 9990A suitable for use in tractor axle applications.

I have a Landtrac 390 HST which is the same as the Farmtrac just from the previous company. My manual says the same info as Lineman North Florida quoted. I am also looking to change my front axle lubricant, but the only SAE 90 I can find is $10 - $15 a quart. Not good when I need 10.5 quarts. When I do a search on line for SAE 90 gear oil I keep getting 80W-90. Is this the same thing or close enough not to matter?

That's all I have ever found is 80w-90.

I use Mercury Quicksilver 90w, GL4 gear lube in my Mahindra front axle. Available at Walmart about. $8.00 per qt. While it is designed for outboard lower units, it works perfect and I get a bit of added protection against any water intrusion should that occur.
