Fastest way to remove line of hedges?

I've ripped out a lot of hedges, and still do a couple on occasion. My favorite and quickest/easiest way is to pull them out with a 20' 5/16" chain attached to the drawbar.

*Use a 3'-5' choke chain with a slip hook
*Attach the choke chain as high as possible
*Attach the 20' chain and pull
*If you have a helper, a whack with an ax to a root under tension is sometimes helpful.

If the above doesn't work, the hedges are too big. Maybe you can borrow a bigger tractor.

Hiya,

I may have a simple and fun solution for you  , run down to the local rent-a-reck and get a daily rental, load up on insurance, drive it home and get a good running start at the hedge row. Bet you clear out 100 or so feet the first try. Rental cars can do some amazing AG work around the house.:D

In all seriousness, go buy a hoe or a tooth bar for your green friend, sounds like the perfect justification for a hoe to me. ;)

My 31 cents,

Tom
got a hoe and got a toothbar. maybe I'll try your rental car idea next time around. sound fun. :)

I may change my vote. I ripped out about 1500 sq. ft. of multiflora roses today with just the FEL. Mostly just pushed them out. Sometimes had to lift 'em up first then push. The BH may still be useful for you for the ones near the house since an aggressive push there could result in unintended consequences. For the rest, pushing with the FEL or pulling with a chain ought to do the trick.
Pushing didn't really work too well. pulling did as did ripping out with the hoe. tried most suggestions here and got it all done. pushing might have worked better with a stump bucket dunno. biggest hassle was transport down and back and to/from dump. PITA. all and all a successful weekend project.

The chain approach worked well as did the hoe. we tried different approaches just to try them. hoe worked best but was slow. chain was fastest but sometimes had to be followed with the hoe. loader was good for loading but not the tool to dig with. wish I had rented the stump bucket just to try it. still some mess to clean up but overall a successful weekend's work. thanks to all for your opinions.
