That's why you should remove the front sight from any pistol before heading into bear country.

I too have a S&W .500 and I recommend stepping down on the bullet weights. There is a big difference between the 275 - 400 grain bullet weights and the heavier bullets. )</font>

I definitely agree. With some hand loaded fairly hot loads, behind a 500 gr bullet, I'd have to rate the recoil as "violent". And I have some pretty heavy stuff I shoot that doesn't bother me.

Whoever thinks that a 500 grain .50 magnum will not stop even a large bear hasn't read the ballistics on either the .50 magnum or even a .454 Casull. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I'd attach a picture of what a .50 BMG or a .50 mag does to game, but that sort of picture wouldn't be allowed. If you don't think a .50 mag can stop a bear, ask the tooth fairy to bring you one and try it. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

9mm
I'll go ahead and duck now....
but really, its cheap. very little recoil. Wife will shoot it. No, it won't stop a grizzly (and that and the fact that I prefer beef steak is why I leave them alone).
9mm is cheap enough for me to plink w/ and still use in a "defensive" nature. Shot placement counts.
Anyway, if I read between the lines correctly on my Concealed Handgun License... If the ole boy doesn't have powder burns on his shirt when the cops show up you are probably going to jail.
so, 9mm then of course .22 for shore 'nuff cheap entertainment.
beware the man w/ only one gun...he probably knows how to use it

My favorite is .45 ACP. It is my favorite for both target and home defense.

Reminds me when I went to go see my father up north on a Saturday for one day.

Told him "dad, coming up for one day, have the .45 on me, mind picking some ammo up so we can go shooting?".

Get home Sat. night, Sunday we go out to the "range", I get out the .45 and he pulls out the ammo.

.45 LONG COLT!!!!!

I am a fan of the larger calibers.

I own a Ruger Blackhawk .45 Long Colt with a 7 1/2" barrel with a red dot scope. It is a blast to shoot. I use it to target shoot and hunt. I carry it sometimes without the scope loaded with some snake shot my father loaded for me. It will do a number on a snake.

I also own a Kimber Tactical Custom II in .45 ACP It is also a sweet pistol. I use it to compete and sometimes cary it concealed. (I have a permit).

And when the wallet gets light I have a Walther p-22 that is also fun to shoot. It is the only one my wife will shoot. You can buy .22 ammo real cheap.

And I have an old .38 spl. Spesco Falcon revolver. It was my grandfathers. I do not shoot it.

I've got 9mm, .45 ACP, .38 Spl, .357 Mag....

But I carry the 9 mm (Glock 19) most of all.

I'm partial to my Bostich 16D but my Senco 10D using clipped heads holds more rounds. It also has less recoil and fires more rounds in any given time. The Bostich however is more accurate on penetration.

Seriously though, all I have is a 9mm Walther P88. I don't know what I would prefer since I have no experience in any other size.

PS I forgot, I do have another pistol, its a Walther PPK. It has never been shot, (except at the factory, it came with the target they used) I'm not even sure what it takes. It says Cal. 9mm kurz/.380ACP but I know a 9mm won't fit in it.

I'm not a fan of pistols to begin with. I have a few for home security and a couple that I might carry around when I'm not serious about hunting, but know the oportunity might present itself.

If I'm serious about killing something, then it's going to be a rifle or shotgun.

My favorite handgun caliber is the one I enjoy shooting the most, or the one that gives me the most pleasure teaching others to shoot. The .22 LR.
