Who mentioned this?

RedRocker,

I'm partial to a .45 myself. Course like I said earlier, if you can, you should carry what you can shoot real well. Be it a 22 or a 50. Now, I do happen to think the 10mm is the best all around round since it can be loaded real hot or not. And give you a fair number of rounds. My 1076 holds 8+1. My service 45 has 8+1 as well. Given the choice, which I don't have, I would rather carry the 1076.

Now this is my usual long winded way to get a point, but I don't think a 45 in Miami would have made a difference. The 1076 surely would. Ironically for this conversation, my 1076 is a surplus FBI pistol. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You should qualify with what you shoot. To do otherwise is rather dumb. But back in the day Law Enforcement did things that today just are not acceptable. I knew a guy who was an officer in Ohio along time ago. His firearms training was 8 hours. Course if you practice with crappy reloads and do well, you will do better when you qualify with good quality ammo. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Dan

I think the question is how many times in a law enforcement officers "life" will they actually have to use thier weapon in the line of duty?

I think chances are very low.

Personally, you could never pay me enough to put my life in potential harms way every day, dealing with the "people" that they normally have to deal with on a "regular" basis.

I carried a 3" .45 for personal protection for a long time. Seven rounds and one in the chamber. Carried it with corbons, and shot regularly with "hot loads" no problem whatsoever.

I now carry that Hi Power, and even if I didn't happen to have seventeen in the mag and one in the chamber, I would still carry it, no ifs ands or butts.

SHOT PLACEMENT is what it's all about.

My follow up shots are quicker with the H.P, just as accurate as my Kimber. Grips are thinner, and with my small hands, the H.P feels as if its the easiest "pointing" handgun I have.

As far as the incident mentioned in Fulton county Ga., could it of been a 9mm if several people were killed?

Per my first post, hoped it wouldn't become a 9 vs .40 (or .45 for that matter /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

Well, I doubt I'll ever have a suicide mission or inner city riot directed my way, nor will the "little black helicopters from the UN" be forthcoming, so .....
1. old 22cal Ruger, for fun, and it's by far my favorite
2. PPK Walther (380) in the glove compartment of my pickup, and a SW "detective special" 38 snub nose in the car
3. 357 SW "california highway patrol", basically a lighter weight revolver, for finishing off a wounded deer (rifle hunting is not the issue, but this dog hunting stuff with shotguns doesn't always result in a clean kill), zapping snakes when hunting, etc
4. 40 cal Glock and 9mm Glock for no good reason - basically, a mistake, as I've no real use for them
When I showed up in Alaska to fly fish my first (of many) trips from 1980 through the present, they - the folks at the largest fly fishing shop in Anchorage - politely but firmly recommended I not shoot at a bear with my 357, or a 44, or anything short of a shotgun. Why, well the ballistics are obvious, but also folks tired after a long day slogging along streams working trout and then surprised by a large critter tend to NOT be as accurate as they might be on a shooting range, and it takes some pretty good shots to bring down a larger bear. So, the fly fishing guides I worked with carried a pump (ALWAYS WORKS, and is attached to the backpack most guides carry for gearing up clients) 12gauge with 3 or 3.5 inch chambers, 00 buck and a 5-7 shell magazine -- or a recommendation to spray a small fire extinguisher sized combo of mace and pepper powder at the bear, and back away. A pistol - sure - best of luck.
Oh yeah, the country home defense weapon is not a pistol, but a 10 gauge double barrelled "coach gun" (18 inch barrels, small stock) - sure, I've lots of other weapons around, as do most folks answering this thread, but in close quarters......

I have a problem with the idea that we may be seeing the requirements lowered because some of the canidates may not be able to handle the heavier loads. I believe this may be the issue with the 9mm. I dont have a problem with anyone owning one or carrying one. However, if the law enforcement that is there to help protect me is carying them because they cannot handle a .45, it becomes an issue. I prefer someone who is capable of performing with enough firepower to do the job.

I did........... /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Sig,
I realize I got a little long winded and started heading down the path you were trying to avoid

Per my first post, hoped it wouldn't become a 9 vs .40 (or .45 for that matter ).

Sorry, guess I started that with bringing up the FBI story. I dont have a problem with any gun, I like them all. Just think some are better suited for different applications. These feelings may be stronger than some others. Doesnt make them right I guess. Just what I believe.

I think the question is how many times in a law enforcement officers "life" will they actually have to use thier weapon in the line of duty?

I think chances are very low.

If I'm a cop, who cares.............All it takes is one time. If the bad guys know the cops are as well equiped as them, they may think twice. Maybe fewer confrontations, unless its suicide by cop. Then it becomes hopeless...

Anyhow, I have enjoyed this post. Thanks for starting it. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

For what it's worth, I happen to think that a .45 is "probably" more apt to "stop a man" than a 9mm "all things considered" /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif

On that note, think a 10mm would do a "little bit better" than a .45 /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

.44 would probably be "more" than a 10mm.

So on and so on /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On that note, I would rather have my NAA .380 than nothing at all in a "bad situation".

By the way RedRocker, something tells me that if you REALLY WANTED that Alaskan guide gun, you could get it /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I asked the question because you used the phrase 'Refering to the lightened gun for the capability impared.' which I took to mean that someone else had mentioned it.

 / Favorite handgun caliber? #129
That was my own rant I was refering to. Actually, I meant it as an example of what I think is happening in todays politicly correct society.... Thats a totally different post though, so I'll leave it there..

Sig, I agree, the bigger the better in this case.. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif For LE I feel the 10mm or .45 would be the most suitable. The .40 would be the smallest I would recomend..

One of these days I'll spring for one. I've got the 44 mag guide gun, it's a nice shooting little rifle. Good thread /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
