Favorite handgun caliber?

So do I and I agree. Very fun. Used it a couple of weeks ago while hunting feral hogs. It's a great companion piece to my .44 revolvers.

Not a big fan of scopes on lever rifles, but I put a leupold 2.5x compact on it using low height mounts and it looks and works great. Big field of view and easy to use. It's probably never coming off the rifle. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Better use earplugs though. Mine's ported and wow that's loud. Really helps with the recoil and follow up shots though.

Stopping power and killing power are not the same thing. Almost any pistol cartridge has killing power. In fact, up until lately, since the inner cities have been overtaken with 9mm ammo flying hot and heavy every night, I would have said more people have been killed by .22s than all others combined when you take into consideration accidents, suicides, etc. It may not be true any more.

Stopping power is a different matter. When I used to read gun magazines, I think it was in one of Jeff Cooper's columns in which he answered a writer's question of what handgun to take to Alaska to stop a grizzly charge. He said there was no documented instance of anyone stopping a bear charge with a pistol and only a heavy rifle or shotgun with slugs would be up to that task. This has been years ago, so that may have changed with the advent of all these .50 BMG derringers and the like that are on the market now. Bears can and have been killed with far less (I have read that .222 Remington was the choice of Eskimos to hunt polar bears), but stopping them is another matter.

Energy figures are misleading. A .22-250 Remington has more energy than a .45-70--which would you rather have to use on a bear? Stopping power is more closely related to caliber and bullet weight. Velocity, after a point, only serves to flatten trajectory and make hitting things easier. A fellow named Taylor addressed this in early 1900's.

On topic, I have owned and used the following pistol calibers: .22LR, .32auto, .38 S&W, .38 S&W Special, .357 Mag, .44 Mag, .45 ACP, and .45 Long Colt. If number of rounds fired over the course of a lifetime is any indication of a 'favorite', then the .22 wins hands down.

I have only felt the need to carry a gun once in my life, and that was for about four hours. At the time the only handgun I owned was a Ruger Blackhawk in .45 LC so I stuck it in in the waistband of my pants, covered it up with a jacket, and walked through the Wichita Kansas airport. Imagine doing that today.

Today, if I felt the need to carry a gun where I was going, I think I'd just re-think the whole trip as to whether I really want to go at all. Getting in a shootout is about as low as anything can get on my priority list and I'm fully aware that a person often doesn't get to choose the time and place; it chooses him. That's a decision I've made--I'm not going to tote a gun around on the off chance that I will be in Luby's cafeteria when some lunatic opens up. I'm not saying it's right for everybody, only for me. Although I own a number of handguns, it is apparently not for protection as I keep them all locked up, unloaded.

So, for me, with the stopping power question rendered moot, the .22LR is the favorite cartridge.

That deal was a defining moment in my life and one of the reasons I never go unarmed. I can think of nothing more horrible than watching your family killed while you stand there powerless to stop it. Suzanne Gratia Hupp knows exactly how that feels, I hope to never find out.

I could be wrong, but I believe a .22 caliber has killed more people per year than any cartridge in that year in question (and gosh darnit, a 9mm won't do it!).

Cooper and Taylor are a whole other world and topic.

Bigger the "animal" the bigger the bullet.

As far as "gun magazines", read some from the 60's, 70's or 80's. Very interesting.

Gun magazines are in the business to sell to those who advertise. Ever read a gun magazine with a "very negative" review on a manufacturer who advertises in that same periodical? Answer is "no". If you can prove me wrong let me know the date, review, and where the manufacturer (sp?) is advertised in that same magazine as the "review" (date wise). Won't happen.

Magazines are to sell to people, no matter what the "facts".

Hard to beat a 22-250 out to 400 meters with a target under 200 lbs /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif (let me add meaning a "two legged" target. I would never shoot an animal that "large" with a bullet that "small", intending to have it for a meal).

My favorite for home defense and for just joy of shooting is my Ruger GP100 357 Magnum.

For the times I carry, I have a 5 shot Taurus 38 Special. It's light and slim.

Both group pretty well.

Yeah, I prefer revolvers. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

You're right, I've never seen them criticize a gun. But I have seen many magazine authors rip into specific cartridges. Elmer Keith spoke with contempt about the 9mm and .38 Special as man stoppers. Same way with Jeff Cooper. Of course, everybody has their favorite calibers--that's what this thread is all about. I'm sure Elmer liked the ones he inspired. Cooper loved the .45 ACP.

Have you ever read any of Gun Tests reviews? They tell the good, bad and ugly.

GUN TESTS

I used to subscribe to gun tests and thought it was excellent. I do remember stating that a couple of years ago and some members immediatly jumped on that , stating essentially that it was a rag. To each his own, I guess.

Well, I'm with you. I think they call it like they see it.

Thats why it's interesting to look at gun magazine articles through the past (in decades), particularly in cartridge selection and design.

It's interesting to get through the "fact and fiction" relating to marketing and sales /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Example. Saw a handgun magazine from the 70's. On the cover it was "screaming" with a big picture of gun I honestly didn't reconize. Opened the magazine and read the article. All it did was talk about this "new" gun and about all it's features. Became very apparent to me at that moment that all this article is was a "sales gimmick" to an extent.

Makes me wonder how all those new "designs" are going to do with handguns like those new Berretta (sp?), Walther's and so on. Almost getting to look like space guns. "Cooler" looking the gun, the more sales I guess /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

On that note, old enough to remeber when that "new" gun came out that the press "screamed" about being plastic and that you could get it through metal detectors and onto planes.
Gaston Glock did come up with a "bonafide new design" that looks like it's going to be around for a while.

Do have to give it to the 1911. So far, has stood the test of time.

Gun Test was probably the most un biased reviews that I had read in a long time. Notice how (or at least when I read them couple of years ago) the "magazine" was more like a "flier", very simple, and not alot of advertising from anyone. Guess they didn't care if they ticked anyone off /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
