I wouldnt say that is all AC is good for.

We have made countless things with the AC box and 6013 and 7014:D

Several wood hauling trailers, numerous repairs on equipment and implements, etc

now don't go confusing fact and opinion... lots of us have made durable items using an ac welder..

look who made the comment??? same guy who basically said hobart machines were junk, and people who bought them made mistakes.

and yes.. i have saved copies of posts to 100% back those 2 statements up.. saved em before they were pruned! :) just because.. :)

Don't you have an AC only machine?
AC is the number one killer of arc blow, that an aluminum Tig welding is all AC is good for! :D

Ya I have AC only. If only my wallet would find some extra cash to buy a PA-200......

Good point.

Fact: AC "buzzbox" IS useful to many people and is quite capable of making sound welds

OPINION: AC is good only for TIG Aluminum

THAT should clear up Fact vs Opinion:thumbsup:

You don't have anything better to do than save my posts? You sure are a sensitive little fella aren't you?

Guess the rest of the welding industry is making a mistake by using DC machines, right?

I used a Tombstone Lincoln 225 back in 1969 to build 2 ea 40 foot long 4 wheel cotton hauling trailers from the ground up. I bought the axle stubbs, rims and tires, everything else I fabbed up with the aid of a Victor cutting torch, Lincoln 225 and grinder. I dont even think they made 7018 AC rods back then but I used 6011 and 7018 DC rods in the cracker box. 6010 for first pass and then weld out with 7018 They would arc out often and were hard to start, difficult to weld overhead with, but I had a really steady hand back then and they got the job done. I hauled many loads of cotton weighing in at over 10,000#. Dad retired in 1980 and they were still hauling cotton last time I saw them in 1990. Might still be around somewhere.
DC is much easier to control and I think everyone who has used it agrees with that, but the old Lincoln 225 with copper windings AC machine has built a lot of farm and hobby stuff before the DC machines became affordable or available for home use.
Sure, I use DC exclusively for stick now, but I would never say that AC is useless for stick.

I save the posts so that cannot be disclaimed later.. :) and there's always time to preserve good histrracle info like that if it ever needs to be presented in the furure.. lest people forget.

I never said that. Remember.. I'm not the one throwing down blanket statements of 'only this works' or 'that doesn't work'. ( that would be you.. and yes.. I do have the archived posts to prove that.. :) )

Ac has it's applications. Dc has it's applications. There is overlap in the applications. Size of the 'population' of the applications does not diminish the suitability of a certain machine or process in a certain application.

Even when you look at an application where DC does a better job than AC, but AC still does the job to a suitable degree, then you look at other factors, like price for instance.

If someone has a budget of 250$ for a welder they need for a 'suitable' level of work, and they can buy an AC machine in that budget, yet cannot afford for whatever reason, the DC machine which could be a realistic 30+% premium , then the AC machine has a practical application. Could be anything from a corporate budget constraint to a personal budget constraint, or a cost/benefit ratio deal. ( IE.. Hmm.. I make 3 welds a year on my farm.. do I want a 400$ machine that makes a darn nice weld, exceeding my needs, makes coffee, buffs yer nails and does DC.. or do I need the 150$ one that makes a weld that will at least meet the minimum quality of my needs, oh yeah and I'm on a 100% fixed budget and to buy out of bufget means I starve for 2 months.. )

Not everything is about the look of the bead. got to think outside the box now and then.

, but I would never say that AC is useless for stick.

That is exactally MY point.

Sure, if I had a choice and money were no object, I would use DC exclusively too. It is no doubt better. I am not arguing that. But that certainly doesnt mean AC is useless.

I kinda take offense to that as a "put-down" for those of us who dont weld day-in and day-out, and are not professionals, and perhaps cannot afford a DC machine.

Kinda like a big time farmer with several large tractors saying my little CUT is worthless:confused2:......Well, it certainly isnt useless. It just isnt as good as others.

But some people just have to have the "best" of everything. And everything else is worthless and those with anything less are somehow inferior:mad:
