Feeling Responsibility....

He is a good neighbor and he is happy to pay the $35.

My God, you people are making me out to be a crook. Geez, I mean, I am a sinner...but not a crook.

He will happily pay for services rendered. What is soo wrong with that.??

Should I go to work for nothing, in the morning.??

And, how have you people earned you're money.?? Good for you...I won't knock you for it.

Have a great week.

Let me explain a bit. Before we moved to the country I had every neighbor in the world begging me to do tractor work. And I charged them some for doing so. I was the only one capable, willing, and had the equipment to do it. It was like every second of my spare time was doing tractor work for the neighbors. And they were happy to pay for it. When we moved to the country three years ago every one out here is self sufficient. No one needs any help. It's a situation thing. An adjust to thy neighbor thing I guess.

I don't think it's wrong at all to get money for services rendered, even for an elderly neighbor. I would bet you wouldn't charge him in the event of a disaster, but this is an agreement that is likely in the best interest of both parties (if he was paying to have it plowed in prior years). My assumption is that he is paying you either the same/less than he was previously and it's money that you can use to pay for your equipment.

Can disaster strike on any given day? Sure. But I'm with you - the chances are pretty small and both parties come out ahead.

Good luck and take care.

Same here in rural Maine. We are a very independent group. We have unique ways of takeing care of ourselves. The way life should be.

Though my neighbors can not clear their driveway of snow they do nearly every other task around the yard and it is impeccable. Always tidy and neat with no debris hanging out all over.

And might add this....They are NOT elderly and poor. If they were I would help them out for little or nothing.

You might be better off allowing them to 'share in the expense' rather than paying you to do a job for them.. That's how they tell you to do it when you take your buddie for an airplane ride.

What ever works for you and your neighbor is fine and your business. My mother is 89 years old and if someone doesn't charge her for work done, she will literally hunt them down and make them. She takes pride in her independence and insists on "paying her own way."

Where I live there are about as many tractors as people, so you would starve to death trying to make any money around here.
