If your Max 28 has a KSB solenoid on the injection pump.... THEN the solenoid is energized for a time period when the key is first turned on to change the engine timing [ actually usually just changes timing by increasing injector pressure ] to aid starting... My Mahindra starts fairly easily when cold, and I get the puff of smoke... Don't worry, be happy ....

" KSB = 'Kaltstartbeschleuniger' which is German for Cold-Start-Device?

The KSB is used as a cold start aid. It will advance the timing on the engine when cold, and is designed to provide substantial injection timing advance in the low engine rpms so as to improve engine operation / emissions when the engine is stone cold after start-up. When in the engine rpms come up, the substantial timing advance tapers off to a much smaller measure of advance. " [ from BombedCummins.com ]

Why does it the Max 28 smoke more on startup

I'm pretty sure it's a Mitsubishi engine in that 28 and that it's same same engine I have in my 3016.

Mine behaves like yours on startup......normal from what I know.

Your statement is about engine regeneration, and has nothing to do with hyd regen.

Thanks for jumping in there Dave. That explanation is absolutely dead on. I could not have worded it any better than he did.

yup, move the lever a little, it dumps reeeeaaaallllly slow, then a 'dead spot' in the lever, then what I would call a normal dump. There's nothing fast about it....but acceptable.

I just never paid attention to it before.

I didn't check the 'cans' as I suspect mine is what everyone else has.

Thanks for the great explanations everyone.

In my literature from Mahindra, loader cycle times are @ full rpm. Try it and see if there's a difference. There is with mine. By the way, the ML106 has the fastest cycle time compared with all loader models ML102 - ML111. However, the smaller cylinders won't lift as much as the Max28

Years ago I had a JD770. It was my first 4x4 loader tractor I ever owned. Even with a smallish hydraulic pump, the loader was super fast because it had tiny lift cylinders. I think it lifted maybe 700 lbs. But if you were within those specs, the loader was a hotrod. If you don't use the max capacity all the time, smaller lift cylinders aren't a bad thing.

Most of us do not run at max rpm (and consequently not at max flow), and most of us don't lift max amounts regularly. The ML106 on the 2615 was a great compromise between speed and capacity. But I think the marketing folks love big numbers in each column, and lift capacity is looked at more than cycle speed, hence larger cylinders.

I read through this entire thread even though I've never felt like I had this issue. I will say there are some very knowledgeable people who help us and I am grateful for them. I sure learned alot about hydraulic pressure, cylinder volume, etc. It was quite an education and fascinating.
