Uh, George... Your post #40 and My post #39 should have been combined to save readers the trouble of reading it twice.

I see the bottom line for both of is to have someone name/describe those instances that are predictably safer without seatbelts.

I guess all those liability fearing companies are afraid to tell us when to not wear our seatbelts for some unexplained reason. Surely if there were known circumstances when NOT wearing a seat belt was safer, they'd put it in the manual to prevent lawsuits.

Pat likes to put out fires with gasoline. I prefer to spray them with ether. It does not take as much and does a much more profound job.

Tractors in seatbelts. If I have a cab to contain me within the confines of the ROPS then I really dont think I need to wear seatbelts while the cab doors are closed.

Not if your head is hard enough.

Even with seatbelts I have managed to take a good knock on the noggin when hitting an unexpected bump, a few times.

A couple of them were actually beneficial and could be listed under when it is better to not wear belts (although I had it on.) I whacked my head pretty good on the forward overhead and apparently cleared up some spurs or other restrictions to full and pain free movement of my neck.

We seem to think alike (at least on this one) and share the same diplomatic skills. Kinda scary.

At this point I'd settle for a few laughs at my Gilda Radner reference. Am I the only one who thought she was funny on SNL?

Here it is...

The post you've all been waiting for...

A bunch of years ago, I delivered a load of firewood to a set of cottages on an island. I loaded & unloaded the barge with my trusty 8N.

I believe it is safer to leave the belt off while operating on a barge in water deeper than the height of your tractor.

So there!

P.S. My 8N had proper ROPS & seatbelt built for it before I drove it off the trailer onto my own property.

I would not feel comfortable wearing a seat belt near a large precipice. I do not trust the retention system sufficiently to be comfortable rolling or tumbling down end over end and being tossed out eventually. I rather take my chances trying to escape the situation right at the beginning. If it were a five point belt system, that would be a different story. If it were a larger machine where I could not escape, then my choice to escape is limited and one of those variables. For the size of my tractor, I cannot seem to feel safe when I have rocks directly to either side of me that if indeed the tractor did go over, my head would be where the rocks are. I do not feel safe being belted in where there are fences directly by your side. I worry about being impaled on a post or picket should the tractor go over with me attached and a part of the fence shoots through the rops. For similar reasons, I do not feel comfortable being tied to the tractor when back filling a foundation that has either rebar or form retention spikes sticking out. Going 160 mph thru a quarter mile in a car that has a full roll bar system accompanied by a 5 pt belt system makes me feel a whole lot more comfortable than being on my tractor with the seat belt on in the situations I mention above. And this may be the crux of my problem. I don't trust the present system to protect me in certain situations and that is probably the reason I would rather escape. Patrick, whatever you want to call it, psychic or preternatural, gut, I just get the willy's being belted in during those times. Its like when you know someone is watching you. Your instinct just screams at you that this isn't right. It may not be based on empirical data such as the feeling of being in love is not, its just there.
If anyone wishes to condescend or call me an idiot, so be it. This is about as honest as I can be.

Then take your ROPS off your tractor so it won't impair your ability to jump clear...

OK, when does wearing a seat belt make you predictably less safe?

Now this one is pretty simple. Both you and the wife have just got in the car. You're buckled in, she hasn't yet and you make a comment that really infuriates her. Your speedy exit will surely be delayed several seconds! :D :D :D :D

Pat

Pat, if you ever run over a ground hornets nest on a tractor without a cab, you will wish your seatbelt was not buckled. Swatting bees with one hand while trying to get out of the seat belt with the other is not fun. I know! And yes, it is safer for me to run away on foot while swatting bees than to try to speed away in my tractor while swatting. :p

PS If I had a ROPS and a seatbelt, I would always wear it. :)

Pats tractor has a cab. Although obviously it does not have a padded roof like a montana does.
