THats also where we get the word turn-stile. Ive been walking a number of times in England in the country omn their country footpath system. There are all kinds of neat stiles there ranging from swing gates with a curved piece of fence that only allow one person through at a time - to what look like simple wooden stepladders going over a fence or dry-stone wall (the traditional stile).
THeres an old English riddle that is relevant - "Would you rather walk a mile, jump a stile or eat a country pancake?"
