I need something like a fence line mower to pull behind my JD 2305. I have four 700' rows of 10 year old spruce trees that are getting big enough that my 62" MMM does not get the job done with out getting close enough to knock the candles off it the spring. I would like to use the rear PTO but have been unable to find anything that is for a S-CUT this size, all I have seen are for CUT and utility tractors. What do you guys use?

Just a suggestion, I have never used one, but there are trailmowers which are basicly a mower deck with a motor on top with a hitch that you can pull strait behind or offset to the side. Swisher is the most common brand but would say there is more. Look at NorthernTools.com in the lawn and garden section and see if that is what you want. They have finish mowers and rough cut also. Good luck!!

Google "Fence mower" and you will see several options.

The problem with every fence mower I've ever seen is they don't reach out anyways near far enough past the tractors wheels.
The drawback of pull behinds is you still can't mow out over ditches and banks with them.
* Build a 3 point hitch mower out of a push mower.
Construct it so it can be extended out over ditches and banks from either side of the tractor

How about a sicklebar trail mower? Bought this old Allis Chalmers 80T 6-ft mower a few months ago for $150

Another option: a Farmall Cub with a mid-mount sicklebar mower. Might make a nice addition to your tractor collection for a few thousand bucks.

How are you going to get it to work around the fencepost?

What fence posts? He's talking about 4 rows of spruce trees. He didn't say what the spacing is between trees, so I just tossed out a few options to see how he would respond.

Yep, that's what the title says.

Then he says he's looking for "something LIKE (emphasis mine) a fence line mower" and then goes on to tell us about his spruce trees. My interpretation: he's mowing around a bunch of big trees, not a fence line.

I never have been a very good story teller but FLUSHER has it figured right. I am mowing around spruce trees that are on average 8 feet tall, spaced 20 feet apart and with rows 20 feet apart. My 62" MMM sticks out past the tractor about a foot or less but that isn't enough to mow all the grass under the trees with out hitting the lower branches and knocking the new growth (candles) off. If I weave in and out between the trees it takes 45 minutes to do the trimming. If I go all the way around each tree it takes over an hour and I get dizzy while doing the 140 trees in this wind break.

Well they do make a "side" mower for vineyard use for getting in and out between vines but they are usually an add-on to a shredder/flail mower, hydraulically powered and are pricey!

* Build a 3 point hitch mower out of a push mower.
Mount the mower on an adjustable telescoping arm connected to the 3 point hitch bracket.
Make the arm what ever length you need to get the mower 2 to 4 feet out from the tractor rear tires.
Basically all you are doing here is making a bracket for the tractor to hold and push the hand mower with so you don't have to.
If I could weld I'd be building one to mow out over my banks and ditches with.
Sounds like a ZTR mower would work for your trees but would be worthless for my banks and ditches as you can't drive them over embankments and through ditches.
