Fence Tools

I've been putting off buying fence tools ever since we closed on this place. I knew we would need them some day. We have several miles of three, four, and five strand barbed wire fences. I was just too busy aquiring more important items. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Fate has caught up with me though. I found a broken top wire on the pond fence when I was mowing the other day. It's no big deal, we don't have any animals at this time, and I don't think the catfish will try and escape, but it does need repair.

So what should I go buy in the way of tools, and what should I avoid? I have a come-along, but it is too heavy for fence work I suspect, so I pretty much need everything.

For starters:

A nice tractor of your favorite color.
A couple good pairs of leather gloves (If you're a card carrying PETA person, good luck)
A fence stretcher - looks like a car jack.
A hammer
A high-t/barbed wire splicing tool - cuts the wire and crimps metal ferrules (sp).
A couple different sizes of ferrules to splice the fence.
Galvanized staples - 1 1/4 inch minimum.
Spare posts
Barbed wire
A spool of high-t or other good tensil wire to retighten corner posts or intermeditate support posts.
A good hammer
A trailer or palet lifter to carry your stuff.
A drawbar for your 3pt hitch with assorted hooks, cinches, etc. You can use your 3pt hitch to pull out posts. A FEL is good also - just go with your preference.
A couple pieces of chain.
A dictionary of naval terms to apply to situations that warrant.
Patience.
Good weather.
If at all possible, another set of hands to help with barbed wire - it has a habit of having a mind of its own (the dictionary of naval terms is used quite often here)

With a little practice you can back your tractor up to a metal T post and lift the box while gently applying pressure to the post and you can pull the posts that way. If you use your loader to remove the posts, be careful. I have seen the lower lips of the buckets bent from trying to pull posts.
