We bought 32 acres in upstate NY, where I grew up (tired of the Texas heat!). We're looking at lowline cattle (Angus) and some sheep, etc. Looking at High-Tensile...

Kind of in the same boat as you. We've been looking at high tensile and so we're running a test area to see how well it works. We're working on finishing up a 5 acre area and we're going to turn out 3 goats 4 pigs and a cow or two to see how it holds up. I hope it meets or exceeds our expectations. Once you learn how to tie the knot with high tensile it goes up really fast compared to other fencing I've put up. If it doest work out then I'll probably run a woven wire fence with electric offset and one or two hot strands up top. Trying to keep from that though because the cost goes way up!

Have you done much fencing previously?

Send pics if you have them, I'd live to see!

I haven't done a lot. I've put up a 200x75 pen for my lab using weld wire and I've helped a friend put up a lot of barbed wire. I'll try and get some pics up of those and of the high tensile asap. I don't hava any pics on my phone

I'm bad about not carrying my phone with me while I'm at home. Finally got around to taking some pictures. Here's a few of the high tensile smooth wire electric fence I put up by myself over better part of a week. Ran right at 2,000' Took longer to drill holes with pto auger than anything else. 6 strands and around the garden I added a strand of barbed wire at ground level. We kind of let the weeds take over this year.

I also installed about 900' of staytuff fence along the roadside where one small pasture will go. I added a strand of electric above it and an offset electric wire on the inside. It took me twice as long if not more to install compared to the 6 strand smooth wire. It's on one side and the other 3 sides of the pasture will be smooth electric. For whatever reason I didn't take a picture of that..I'll try and get one.

Put in an order 6 days ago with kencove for a Shaver hd10...was suppose to ship last Friday then they said Monday then they said today and it still hasn't shipped. I'll give them another day or two. Hopefully it'll be here soon.

Roll fence with a topper of electrified barbed wire is the only thing that
will work with angus if you are limited on time to tend fence.

Sheep tend to corner themselves, become injured from crowding
and are notorius fence jumpers when low fences is used-its better to use
roll fence for both animals.

The ag fencing contractors have fencing units that plant hundreds of feet of roll fence per day-stretch, drive posts, secure roll fence to T posts unroll topper wire fix corner posts retension fence with one tractor and fencing unit. you shoul look at having X acreage done at first as you can have more added later if you really want 4 legged rug rats that need a lot of work- Don't forget that any fence other than roll fence or cattle panels will not keep out predators.

There's 4 different farms between the house and town that have one electrified single strand barbed wire maybe a foot or so off the ground with Angus and I've yet to see one escape which amazes me especially when neighbor few houses down has, at last count, 30 Angus on 80 acres with 4x4 woven wire and two stands barbed wire up top and I've watched his cows jump his fence. I've put a many of his cows back to pasture in the middle of the night on my way home from work.

I've seen several farms in my area use high tensile smooth electric for horses and cows and they claim they don't have any issues. I figured as cheap as ht is compared to roll fence and barbed wire I'd give it a shot. If I start losing animals I'll redo the fence. For me its worth the try.

As of last test I'm throwing 11k+ volts threw my fence. Neighbors dog including my own dogs have touched it once..maybe twice depending on how stupid they are and you would swear someone shot em by the pop of the fence and them yelping. Sounds like a pellet gun going off when it pops em.
