Feral cats... Haven't seen any of them around here in years due to the Coyote's. What we do have that is sad and disturbing, are dogs that are not neutered or spayed, and locals who think a dog should roam free, or worse yet, be chained up 24/7. The root of either one of these problems are not the animals themselves, but the lack of education of the humans involved. As far as a " Global Ecological Problem ", my money is on Climatic change, not cats running wild...
It would be difficult to find any problem where humans aren't the root. As for education, what's not to understand about keeping pants zipped and legs together after two children?

Yet that ship sailed a long time ago; we are such a dominant presence on the planet that it would be hard not to have an impact. Personally I believe that all of the problems we see, whether real or imagined, are simply the planet taking care of itself. It's supported life for much longer than we've been around and most likely will continue to do so long after we're gone.

I sometimes wonder what it will look like and how long before it return's to normalcy when mankind has finished. There are old men who believe they are an extension of or God Himself. They have no regard for their own children's future, much less those on opposite side of earth. Given means and opertunity,I belive they would use every oz of nuclear energy that exists as their swan song. .

If I read the article correctly, the poison is selective to act on CATS, not other mammals. That would be responsible.

I also have had conversation regarding the capture, neuter, and release programs. Guess what, IT WORKS!

The "big males" are the targets for the neuter approach. They run off the lesser (but furtile) males. kill them even, as part of cat social structure.
Then there are no kittens to maintain populations.

If indiscriminate population reduction is used, it's only two or three generations until the population restores it's self to the upper numbers that the habitat will support.

The Santa Barbara channel Islands have goat population troubles that requires paid professional rifle men. The Galapagos have both goats and rats. It's costing millions to suppress each. The goats only were brought under control through neutering programs. Shooting them, even from aircraft didn't work. They breed like Cats!

Didn't Australia have a rabbit population issue not so many years ago? Like 30-50 yrs?

The real problem with cows is that the methane should be collected and used for fuel. Where are the inventors? :)

Reminder...never discuss cats or electrical wiring on any message board. The topic does bring up something from many years ago where Wisconsin proposed to allow shooting of feral cats. It made the national news and the outcry was so loud that the proposal was withdrawn. In the meantime a few friends commented that (like me) they never knew it was illegal. So we're back to where we started...shoot on sight, just don't talk about it.

Long ago some government agency decided to attempt coyote control. They used an explosive cyanide device - M44. It had good intentions but backfired. The device killed more farm animals/open range livestock than coyotes.

I have two barn cats. I provide food - they get water out of my lake. In exchange they have a very significant impact on the rodent population. I'm hoping soon they will move on to the pocket gophers.
