Ferel hogs

I have a lease in central TX. We trapped or shot 82 hogs the other year. It barely makes a dent in the population. With shooting, they start getting smarter, come out later at night and become more weary.

I've heard the best way to eradicate them is to build a 50' round pen and bait it over a series of weeks. After they get used to coming, install a one way door and you'll trap the entire sounder of hogs in a night.

They get trap smart with the smaller portable traps. We'll typically use the small trap for a few nights and catch some, then we'll wire the trap open and leave it alone for a month or two.

At one point, we were getting almost $.40/lb for them live (had to be at least 80 lbs.) I believe the price has dropped of late.

Mine have definitely gotten trap smart. On top of that I think I'm feeding every dove and raccoon for miles. Door was even tripped last night and nothing inside, not even a grain of corn. I may have to put out the coon trap and wait till the hogs return to get back to them.

I have a friend who has trapped several hundred in SC. He baits his traps with corn soaked with diesel. According to him, pigs love it but nothing else will eat it. He says this keeps deer, coons and other critters away from his bait.

I never herd of diesel before.

Soured corn works well too. Put some corn in a 5 gallon pail with some water and let it sit a few days to sour.

Just talked to a neighbor down the road (wants to buy my dozer) and he said he just shot a 350 pound sow from his front porch. We've had them here off and on for years but his property backs up to a good sized creek. He sees them all the time. The sows make for some good eatin' so he says. I never have my gun with me during the day when I hear them snorting in the brush. My heart races and I'm looking for a tree to climb. And those darn Mesquite trees aren't too friendly for climbing.
