Fellas could you give me a suggestion or two here? I just had a road cut thru hardwood forest. The road is graveled about 15' wide with about 4' clear on both sides. There are some 4' high banks on one side and 10 foot down slopes on the other.....there are gentle almost flat areas.....
I want to plant deer food and pretty little flowery things for my wife who will hopefully enjoy her time in "my woods" along this road. There is a flat grassy field at the bottom and a semi crowned granular sandy pebbly field up top where I hope to build one day. I'm sure it all needs lime and fertilizer. HOW does one do banks wiith a 3 pt. spreader? The road is almost 3/4 mile so two sides are.....duh 1.5 MILES:confused2: Alot to do by HAND. Suggestions will be most appreciated........also if you have ideas of WHAT to plant.
Thanks

Not impossible to do with a three point hitch spreader
but the germination rate may be next to non existant
simply with one rain fall.

The slopes and the ground are the issue foremost
in this situation. The only quick way to guarantee
fast germination is a drop seeder grass drill using
a tracked tractor.

Red and white clover at the highest grass drilling rate
per acre otherwise your going to lose a world of dirt.

Boeing,

Just some ideas to consider as I'm sure there are many more out there.

For spreading over rough terrain I bought a chest pack type hand crank spreader and then mulch with hay by hand, slow but I'm retired & it gets me outdoors.

Check with your local soil bank, farm beaureau, or conservation department if you can rent or have them hydro seed the banks with your choice of seed. Our local soil bank office has this service.

If the banks strart to erode before they get stabilized by roots you can consider erosion control mesh from Forestry Suppliers, Inc. 800-647-5368 or Portable Generators, Heaters + Stoves, Power Tools, Welders | Northern Tool + Equipment to give the plants a chance.

As for seeds I find grass seed with clover the cheapest & quickest, you can just let nature take care of it or check out Ernst Conservation seeds ( Welcome | Ernst Conservation Seeds ) for native wildflower mixes.

If the drive shows an erosion problem there a lots of inexspensive books out there for loggers on how to build forrest roads to prevent erosion.

How about hiring a Hydro seeder/mulching applicator? A good hydro with liquid fertilizer works very well. Than lay on a layer of mulch hay as they go.
