Fertilizing corn

My patch is much smaller than that...only about 25x50'...so I just spread some high nitrogen granular stuff by hand. Anyone got a price on UAN or something similar in manageable quantities, like 50 lb sacks or less? I've been using turf fertilizer because that's what's easily available without having to find a real agricultural fertilizer source.

For doing this by hand do I just sprinkle lightly between the rows? Why can't I just use my 3pt hitch broadcast spreader and lightly throw it all around? I guess I don't get the concept of why it's important to "side dress".

If some fertilizer gets on the plant it will "burn". I found out when I put ammonium nitrate on my corn. Luckily I only got it on a few of the plants.
