Fertilizing corn

Here is what my dad would do with his small patch. Take a table spoon, holding tumb about half way into the spoon, scoop up what would hold and drop a couple inches beside each plant. Worked great. He could really grow the stuff. Why 1/2 table as opposed to tea? Probably because it was easier for him to hold/handle. Also, don't tell wife you are using her spoons. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Lets see, 5lbs of corn, about 5,000 plants, meaning 5,000 scoops from a spoon. Don't think so!

No, No, No. You are going about it all wrong. Don't ever look at the job and think, I can't do it. Just go out and start. Work for an hour or so and then step back and admire how much you have actually accomplished. Then tomorrow, do a little more. I've found that the hardest part of any job is actually starting it. Once you get past that little voice telling you that you can't, you can do anything.

On the other hand, you could spend the money on a sidedresser. I have a Covington planter. The sidedresser I purchased to go with the cultivator cost me an additional $340. It works like a charm. But this is a new addition for me this year. Last year I was in your boat. Just walked along and doled out the fertilize one row at a tiime. I had a brother cultivating behind me. I was actually walking at a faster pase that the tractor. We did an entire acre this way in one morning.

You can broadcast it if you like, just avoid products like ammonium nitrate that will burn the foliage. However probably should increase the units per acre rate by about 50%, as that much could be lost in the middles to erosion, no roots, etc. Not a big deal on one acre, but on 100 it adds up real quick.

The issue for me really is time. I work so much, I'm lucky to have an hour at the end of the day on Monday, Wed. or Friday. Weekends, lets see, kids, family, mowing, upkeep on the new house (still unpacking here). I need TIME, but don't we all..

Anything falling between the rows will just fertilize the weeds you'll be hoeing later on. Next year get your soil samples and have them tested for what the soil needs, and apply that BEFORE planting the corn. "T" fertilizing while planting is a good idea also, some right among and over the seeds, and some on each side.
