Filling a hole

Thanks for everyone's opinion. I should clarify that it's not actually a hole but area that is cut from the side of about a 10' slope. It's about 5' wide and maybe 8' accross. We actually changed from the stairs to a path on a more gradual slope. So no need to make new stairs. The fill area would be three sides against the hill and the face would be open and create a new slope. Compaction would be difficult as you can't drive over the area. I have a Bobcat and a backhoe for it so that's what I have for equipment to work on it.
Anyway I hope that clarifys what I'mtrying to do. The reason for the trees is I have several that are down and cut into 6' to 8' sections. The trees are all pine of various types. The place is near Durango, CO. Lot's of snow on the area in the winter. Thanks again for everyone's input.

It would be great to see some pics. with the bank info, I have another idea..
make a terrace with the logs for a wall and backfill with dirt. As the logs rot, the dirt will be more compacted and stable.

I think it really boils down to just how much of a pain a bit of settling will cause. I agree with Eddie in that the logs will take a LONG time to decay. We have corduroy roads that have been use for over 50 years, without any rotting to speak of. I dig out white pine stumps that have been there over 100yrs. A pine log on the surface will rot in 10....
Getting the soil compacted around those burried logs is another story.
I am currently filling in an area by my barn to gain more storage space. Logs, brush, rocks, etc. I need the brush to hold the dirt in place, but a heavy rain washes dirt down into the airspaces and things settle. With the organic fill they don't slide or wash out however.
In my case the original bank dropped off at about 45-60 degrees and I have added about 20' of fill at the far side, which is about 25 feet from the original edge. Using logs, etc I have reduced the amount of fill I need by over half and accept that I will always have some settling, but it gives me almost 1000sq ft of useable storage space.
