Final decision: Kubota L3901 or LS 4046?

You said that there isn't a backup LS dealer in your area. To me, that would pretty much be a deal-breaker, especially since you're using the tractor to produce your income. I'm just guessing at your numbers here, but 2 weeks of downtime waiting for a part could likely make up the price difference between that LS and a comparably sized and equipped Kubota. Also, if the Kubota dealer works with other farms in your area, they will likely be better to deal with for on-site repairs or providing a loaner if needed.

Regarding implements, with a few exceptions, anything one of these tractors would use can be hauled behind even a little Toyota truck in a landscape trailer. The King Kutter is a lower priced brand, but they seem to hold up well. Used implements are much harder to find in your neck of the woods than here in the Midwest, which is too bad.

Also, regarding the HST whine, how much throttle did you give it? The whine will be pretty well reduced at higher RPMs. Good luck with your decision, and keep us posted.

Neighbor down the way bought a new L3901 this summer. He was initially dissatisfied with the whine but said it improved after "break-in." (I don't know if it really improved or he just got used to it. He swears it got considerably better). He loves the thing now but his uses are considerably different from yours.

I've driven both options, and I like the LS a little better but I don't think it's a deal breaker. I liked the kubota and I know lots of people who are happy with them.

Implement wise, I think that getting them to my farm is going to be a reason to stick with the dealer. Shipping costs are high, we are in a pretty out of the way area, and my truck is fairly small. But I will continue to look. I haven't had much luck finding used implements nearby, and I've been looking! Seems like a lot of the lower priced tillers online are Kutter King, are those a low quality brand, or can they be decent?

Both dealers offer field service to my area, but the kubota works with lots of farms around me while I'd be at the very end of their range for LS.

Why do you like the LS a little better?
If the answer is comfort then IMHO the choice is made based on that.
People can argue resale, dealer or what ever they want but the fact is after the warranty almost any dealer can work on any tractor. Resale seems to be big on many folks mind but after watching sales for the past several years I see no reason to pick a new machine based on resale as they are all holding their value very well.
I have owned Kubota JD massey case as well as many others and haven't found any one machine that was any better at resale time than the next with one exception and it wasn't a Kubota.

There are quite a few LS owners here, and very few have reported any sort of problems requiring immediate dealer support. The majority of the issues seem to have been very minor, like a fuel gauge not reading correctly, or similar issues which wouldn't stop you from working. I had an LS R4047H for a bit over a year, put 215 hours on it, and it was flawless. In reality, the LS is a lot more tractor in this particular comparison.

Keep in mind that you can get warranty work done by any New Holland or Case dealer as long as it's approved in advance by LS. You can also buy routine service items from them as well...just have to tell them the correct Case/NH model and they can get the parts.

If you're considering an L4701, get a quote on an MX 4800 also. When I was shopping, the MX was cheaper than the 4600 (predecessor to the 4701). I'm also a veggie producer, and I was also torn between those two sizes. I bought the MX because the loader is about twice as capable. I cut lots of firewood which I store on pallets. I also unload pallets of chicken feed from the semi(have to unload a few bags before I can lift them). I couldn't do this with the 3901, but can with my MX. That said, the MX (or that LS, or 4701) with loaded ag tires and the loader on is a heavy machine. It definitely leaves a mark if the soil is wet. Because veggie growers often have to get in the ground when conditions are slightly less than ideal, the smaller machines will have an advantage in that situation.

It's a tough choice. Any of the machines in that size will do the tasks you want. Good call on the HST, I wouldn't go back after using mine. If you need a bigger loader, go for the bigger machine. Otherwise, keep some money in the bank and use it for other important needs.

Yep, used the same logic when I got my 5800 last fall. Seemed like I got a lot more tractor for my needs out of the MX than the L. A few trade offs but MX won for me in the end and for the few hundred extra dollars I nearly doubled PTO HP which was important to me for future possible uses.

I have both LS and Kubota and I really don't have a preference for either brand, they are both good. If both dealers do "at the farm" maintenance for minor tasks, then I wouldn't choose one over the other. I guess the main consideration is "Will I need a larger tractor in the future or will the small Kubota be good even after I expand". If your answer is the small on is OK then that may be the one to choose, but did you consider a smaller version of the LS in your purchase? You should look at apples to apples on pricing before buying either brand.

Also I would go with a 6 foot tiller so you can fully cover your tractors wheel base in case you do go with a larger tractor in the future. A tiller doesn't require much power to run it and every foot extra in width, means you can finish that much quicker. I have a King Kutter and it has had not one problem jumping over all the large hidden rocks that it encounters and it does a fine job. The sheet metal on top is a little thinner than some of the more expensive brands but it is only a dirt shield and easily replaced in 15 years or so if I or next owner needs to.

Wider beds mean a longer reach for all our hand work, which means hurting my back. On this same note, the MX is too big a tractor for me, it's almost 70" wide which is out of the range that will work for us.

I've been doing my best to do "apples to apples" comparisons, but just noticed one I may have overlooked. On Kubota, the given length is "without 3 point". On LS, they say "bumper to link". are they measuring to the same spot, or is LS including more of the 3 point hitch?

All of these tractors with ag tires have adjustable widths. I have the optional 13.6x28 tires on MX. I set the width to 53" from center to center of the tires for summer veggie work. I have one wheel all the way in and the other out one position, so i could get a little narrower. What width are you trying to achieve?

My guess without looking at all of them side by side is that the L4701, mx4800, and the LS you're looking at will all be able to achieve very similar tread widths. Unfortunately, as you've discovered, online specs aren't very easy to compare in many cases. A visit to the dealership noting wheel configurations and using a tape measure is probably the best way to get it figured out.

I usually suggest going "bigger" than you think you'll need, and in most cases I'd suggest that LS over that Kubota, but not in this case. I think the L3901 is the right size. You could get by with less HP for the tasks you describe, but that's the right frame size to still allow for some growth, and might as well get the most HP available in that size.

With that said, also check into an LS G3038 ... That's a comparable tractor to the L3901, and might offer more value and better warranty.

Here's my :2cents:, the only reason for 3901 over L3301 is to run 6' implements... save more by going with L3301.
