Thanks so much for the info! I checked out the Century dealer within 100 miles. Very nice tractors. They didn't have a 2028, but I got to test drive the 3035. From what I can tell, quite a machine! I really like the roomy operator area. The other feature that really impressed me was the loader joystick. Large enough to feel like you're really holding something and it seemed to have two positions for each direction -- fast and slow. I was impressed! However, the dealer wanted $17k+ for the 2028 + loader. Not impressed with that!

I also talked to yet another JD dealer on the way back from the Century place. Nice dealer. Seemed upfront and reccommended the 790. This is good since most skip it for more money machines. However, he quoted me what he claimed to be $300 off list at $12,300. But when I got home and looked online, list for a 790 MFWD was $11,900. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Seems like I should at least be able to talk them down 10% from that to around $10,800. So really, his quote wasn't that great.

As of now, the wife is really liking the pricing and incentives of the John Deere (while I may be color blind, she seems not to be /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif). But hey... if she'll let me get any of the ones we've talked about so far, I can't complain! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Tomorrow we are heading off to find the closest Kioti dealer (50 miles) and to visit KC Canary in Fultonville. Since iv'e heard so much good about KC Canary here on TBN, I figured I'd at least give them a chance to give me an actual good price on a 790.

Time for bed! A busy day ahead!

Both Deere dealers I looked at quoted me 12,123 for the 790 sana FEL. Both pulled that directly out of the book. Dealer #2 said they would take 250.00 off the base tractor price, so 11,873 would be the lowest I have found.

Wow, that is not a rock that is a boulder!!! Put a foundation over the hole in the ground that thing left.

I agree with ya, those Century tractors are built like tanks and have very impressive specs for the tractor and the loader.

Love those Century/Zetor tractors... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Well... I just got back from KC Canary. Talked to Mark there and he and I sat down and discussed the pricing of the machines. First impression of the dealer was good. Very knowledgable, and he seemed friendly. But this was about where the good impression ended.

As we sat there and discussed what I wanted, he quoted me $14,900 for the JD 790 and 419 FEL. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif This quote is a whopping $162 dollars what the configurator quotes me online for the exact same machine at www.deere.com. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Funny... the dealer I talked to who is close by offered me same package with better financing for $14,600. At least I was saving a little money there.

Then I started talking about extras I'd like to get. Small stuff like loaded tires and a toothbar. He quoted me around $300 for the toothbar and around $350 for the loaded tires. This is getting expensive fast! Then he asked where I came from. When I told him I had driven 100+ miles since I was looking for a good deal, he told me that delivery would be a little expensive for that distance. Total cost (Including an LX5 was around $16,000 + tax + loaded tires + toothbar. Somehow, I don't see this as a good deal.

After all this, I asked him if this is the best he could do and he looked at me like I was on some other planet. His response was ya -- we have to make something. Right. Well, he can make it on someone other than me!!! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

Oh ya. And he said he had a used 790. Hmm.. maybe something good will come out of this 100 mile drive! But alas, Mark ruined that too. Without even quoting me a price, he told me that it had turf tires. I told him that that wouldn't work and he said that well -- guess you'll have to go new cause I can't change them. WHAT??? He did the same thing on me with the new one also. I wanted R1's but he said that the only one he had was equipped with R4's. And when I asked him to change them, he told me he'd have to order a new tractor??? Even I can figure out how to change tractor tires... can't he?

So after all of this, I couldn't make it to the Kioti dealer. But for the price Mark here at KC Canary qouted me, I'll get the nice 35 HP Century that has a syncro reverser and feels like a WHOLE LOT more tractor.

Anyway, maybe there is still hope. I've got at least one more JD dealer to go to and the Kubota dealer in the area couldn't even touch the expensive quotes of the JD for a comparable machine... I'll also call the Kioti dealer monday.

Anyway, i'll keep updating this as the saga continues!

Not sure if anyone still cares, but here is the latest in my tractor buying experience!

I visited 3 dealers yesterday: 1 Kubota / NH dealer and 2 JD dealers. Overall, I was very impressed with one of the three.

First stop around 4:00 at the Kubota / NH dealer
--------------------------------------------------------
Walked into the main store area and was soon approached by a salesman. I tell him i've been looking seriously at a JD 790 and that I wanted to see what he could offer me in a similar size both in the way of features and price. I stressed that price was the bottom line and that I didn't want all the bells and whisles. I also stressed that because of this, anything over 30 or so HP was out unless he could beat the price of a 30 HP unit with one that had more power. There were 3 machines that I had in mind when I went and he recommended none of them. His first recommendation was a NH TC48 with SuperSteer. If I'm not mistaken, this tractor is MUCH more tractor and therefore much more expensive than the JD 790 type tractor... And he would have sold it to me to the tune of around $29K. What a deal! I get to spend twice almost twice as much for a machine I dont' want! YAY! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif

So... we try the approach of "Gee. That one looks nice (pointing to a TC30 gear). What's that?" Oh... the light bulb flickers in his head for a moment. (I'm not trying to be harsh. This guy was either very uninformed or just plain lacked common sense.) So he went and got the keys to let me "Try" the tractor. Now, I was under the impression that "Trying" the tractor involved driving it. So I get on, sit down and almost fall off. "Oh ya" he says. We took the bolts off that seat for a customer. You'll have to stand. Right. Clutch, brake, shift, steer and stand. Can I have some more legs??? So I do get to start the tractor, and while balancing on the seat I kinda put it in gear. "Wohhh" i hear from behind me. Where are you going? Oh. I see. Trying the tractor means listening to the nice new engine for a few minutes while he yells specs at me. I shut down and follow him back inside. Meanwhile, the vibration from the motor caused the seat to be precariously balanced on the side fender so when I get off, it falls off as well. At which point he turns to me and asks "Are you trying to break it?"

My initial impression of the machine was good. It was a beefy looking machine which seemed to have a lot of power (from as much as one can tell while balanced on it). But I was very interested with the location of the shifter. I asked the guy about it and he said that it was fully synchronized and I quote "So you can switch from forward to reverse on the fly with just pressing the clutch". While this sounds nice, shouldn't one STOP in between these operations? Oh ya. You have to stop before shifting in any of the gears. Lets see... must stop, must press clutch, that doesn't sound very synchronized to me! Plus, with the shifter on the dash to the left of the steering wheel, it seemed a little awkward to me being right handed and all.

Now we get down to figures. The guy quoted me me $11,673 for the tractor which he assured me would come with all of the bolts to hold the seat in place. Looking good so far I thought. But for the loader he quoted me $4,296. Are the NH loaders really that much more expensive? I know the new version with the curved arms is supposed to be good but I didn't know if it fit this model tractor so I asked. He told me that he isn't putting them on any model until he gets rid of all the old style ones he has. No mention if it even fit the TC 30. In the end, he wanted something like $17k for the Tractor, loader and 5 foot cutter. And to top it off, delivery would have been $150 since I was 30 miles away.

Also, as far as Kubota pricing, I did ask. He wanted $13k for a L2800 and $16k for an L3400. Seemed HIGH!!!!

By the time I was done with this guy, I headed straight over to the Deere dealership. THey closed at 4:30 and I got there right at this time.

John Deere Dealership 4:30
--------------------------------
Completly different feel than the Kubota / NH dealer. A very nice salesman comes out and asks if he could help me, ushers me into an office and we are soon discussion what tractor would be the safest and most useful for my property. And he even asked me if I had a preference between gears and hydros. Apparently around here, gears are just as common. He thought the 790 was a good fit and offered to let me test drive one. I felt a little bad since he was supposed to leave at 4:30 and since I have already driven one, I figured i'd come back if I decided to buy from him and drive it then if I still had question regarding operation or anything.

After much discussion, he said he could give me a quote on paper. Here is what he worked out.
JD 790 MFWD, R4 Tires
JD 419 Loader w/ Hoodguard and Ballast Box
JD LX5 Cutter with slip clutch and safety chains
Total delivered = $15.5k.

He made sure to tell me that they always throw in a ballast box (not standard with the 419) or filled tires with the loader. He also said that he perfers to throw in the slip clutch model cutter since it seems to be less hastle and in his opinion protects the PTO from damage better. While not necessarly the best quote I've heard of, it was way better than any other quote i've gotten and I really liked the dealer. Seemed that I'd rather spend my money there.

After leaving this place, i tried to make it to one last deere dealer who closed at 5:30 but arriving at 5:15 was told that the salesman only comes in for a few hours each day. To top it off, they only had about 2 CUTs there and both were 4310s.

Anyway, Overall, a very good day for tractor shopping after I left the NH dealer.

If all goes well, and I get approved for financing, we may yet see a tractor before fall!

I'll keep updating if people are interested! /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Sounds like the JD guy came through with a decent price. Are there any Branson dealers in your area. These are the same tractors as the Century, but a different importer and they put different loaders on them. Maybe a Branson dealer could have better pricing than the Century guy, whose pricing surprised me.

Oh, and the shuttle reverser is almost always on the left side of the steering, with the throttle on the right, along with the loader controls. The thinking is that right-handed people would rather have their strong hand on the loader controls. Also, there are some shuttle reversers (power reversers) that will allow the tractor to go from forward to reverse without clutching or even stopping. The Century reverser requires that you clutch, and you can be moving slowly, but it is recommended that the tractor be stopped.

I think that when the NH dealer said "So you can switch from forward to reverse on the fly with just pressing the clutch", he was thinking of the shuttle reverser versus the 790 transmission. I believe the JD 790 doesn't have a shuttle reverser and actually has 2 reverse gears. Also the 790 transmission isn't "synchronized", which means that you have to stop to change from gear to gear.

Did you get to drive the Century or another machine with a shuttle reverser? If you go back to the JD guy, test drive the 790 and make sure you do some forward to reverse and back maneuvers. Also try these maneuvers on a machine with a shuttle shift

The TC30 has no shuttle shift of any kind. It has no synchronization. It is a 9x3 mechanical gear transmission. The 790 has an 8x2 sliding gear transmission. Not sure of what the differences are between sliding gear or mechanical other than the number of gears the two models have.

I did try driving the Century with the shuttle reverser. The shifter I was talking about on the TC30 was not a shuttle. It is the actual gear shift located on the left side of the steering wheel in the dash. I'd never seen one there before. I don't mind the reverser on the left, but i'm very used to clutching with my left foot, leaving my left hand on the wheel (where it normally is during loader work and the like) and shifting a floor mounted shifter (or other between the legs type setup) with my right hand. It felt very weird to me to put my right hand on the wheel, press the clutch and shift with my left hand. I can see where it may be nice, but it would take some getting used to.

I will try to at least look at a branson before I make the final decision.

Oops!! Didn't realize the TC30 didn't have shuttle. I looked up the 790, but neglected to check the NH.

Sorry. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
