Congratulations on your L5740, they are really nice tractors.

Allen, may I ask why you went with R1's this time?

You may! :)

From the work I did this week, you couldn't really tell that the biggest part of the work that I do is in the dirt. Only occasionally do I really do any work that I would benefit from R4's.
Actually a better question would be why did I pick R4's for the 3240.
I tried to compromise...
I thought the R4s would give me enough traction in the dirt and at the same time wouldn't hurt my lawn too much when I did yard work. As it turned out, the 3240 was really too heavy to get in my yard and it hurt the grass unless it was really dry.
So...
I thought I would go with R1's for the traction in the dirt.

One thing in particular, the R4s were 17.9 inches wide. The R1s are 13.6 inches wide.
That in itself will help me a lot when I'm pulling my 14 inch breaking plow.
TMI?
Oh well. :)

This year I upgraded to the Michelin XM27 Michelin AG - Products - XM27™ Utility & Industrial

for the fronts. It is called an R1w and it has r1 tread but industrial (R4) sidewalls.

Here are the load figures for my front R1w's per tire.

At 35 psi my front end is rated at over 9,000 llbs.

And these are R1 pattern with R4 sidewalls; Michellin XM27's

25 mph 20 mph 05 mph PSI
1,710 lbs 1,830 lbs 2,500 lbs 14 psi
1,940 lbs 2,070 lbs 2,790 lbs 17 psi
2,160 lbs 2,330 lbs 3,080 lbs 20 psi
2,390 lbs 2,570 lbs 3,370 lbs 23 psi
2,620 lbs 2,810 lbs 3,660 lbs 26 psi
2,850 lbs 3,050 lbs 3,950 lbs 29 psi
3,080 lbs 3,310 lbs 4,230 lbs 32 psi
3,310 lbs 3,550 lbs 4,530 lbs 35 psi

That XM27 Michelin looks really good.
It will be awhile before I can justify changing tires. I'll have to get all I can out of what I got.

TMI, not at all, I asked a question and you answered with an explaination, pretty hard to beat that. ;)

"XM27 Michelin"

After much deliberation, I decided to look into a set of these for the front of my tractor.

$508 and some change each PLUS tax PLUS mounting and also, maybe new wheels.

Thus, after very additional little deliberation, I decided to keep what I have until I MUST replace my tires.

Are there the same handling differences between mixing radial and bias ply tractor tires as there are in cars/trucks? My front tires on my L5030 will need to be replaced by spring.

Someone mentioned filling your fronts with fluid. Check your manual first. It specifically says not to put fluid in fronts on my L4400. I suspect it is an axle wear issue but I may be wrong. Anyway, check before you fill.

The manual does say NOT to fill the fronts.

I'm just going to up the pressure when I have a loader job.

As far as the radial vs bias issue...
Just my opinion but on a tractor, I don't think it would matter much.
Like I said, just my opinion and I could be completely wrong.

I think I'll research that one.
