When you bought and mved in, was it farmland around you?

If it was, I think it's a real aragant attitude for someone to move in, and then expect all the sourounding neighbors and land owners to change.. etc... Just my 2 cents as well.

Agree with soundguy. Its the new folks who should have the burden of getting aliong with their neighbors, initiating the civil conversation, etc. Don't get me wrong, its still a good idea to be the bigger and better man and initiate the civil discussion yourself, but that responsibility should not be with the farmer.

Its a problem around here too. People move into the subdivisions that sprawl around country homes and farms and then complain about loud chickens and the smell of manure....which I do not find objectionable myself. But to me, the law and the authorities need to take a dim view of that sort of behavior and tell the suburbanites and transplanted city folk that if they want to live in Rome they must do as the Romans do.

I have no sympathy for a jerk who would call the police on a farmer doing his job.

There is one area, however, that I think borders on an exception. And that's big industrial pig farms. I still stick by my guns...if you don't like the smell of pig poop, don't move downwind of a pig farm. But man, that stuff is harsh.

I was hunting in eastern NC one day. Waaaay across a huge field, probably a mile away was an industrial pig operation. The wind changed and we got downwind and the smell literally gagged us. I'm not joking, we had to leave, and I was hunting with local guys. They said when the wind changes, they just go somewhere else. I still give the local pig farmer the benefit of the doubt, but I've never smelled anything worse come from a farm and I've smelled plenty of silage and my B-I-L fertilizes all around my cabin with turkey manure...which is nasty...but smells like a rose compared to pig poop.

Well this is My first post, So I hope I dont step on anyones toes . But I,m surrounded by farmground & only have one neighbor within 2 square miles basiclly that farms all of the surrounding property .

The only Reason I,m posting, is Because I think its all about respect which lots of Farmers dont seem to have IMO ( & I was brought up on a Large farm ) . Example Last night the wife & I were grilling outdoors & the dust was flying all around Us. Granted, They have to Cut when they have a chance , But The Wife asked them several times to Just give Us a lil Heads up By giving Us a phone call , So We can plan around it , or at Least a chance to close Our windows before the dust flys . I dont think thats asking to much, But Never seems to happen . Sameway with the Huge Sprayers that speed around the fields as well as the cropdusters . It gets Very iritating at times Because They all have Our phone # But never take the time to call.

This Might Seem Piddly to Most, But as I,m Basiclly a Hermit & haven,t left the property for 4 years or so, I dont think its asking to much As I Never bother Anyone . Anyway sorry for the rant , Just hadto put My 2 bits in. & Make My first post .

BTW, This is a great site & I will have tons of Questions down the road & Hopefully I can help answer some as well. Thanks to all involved . CB

I am a full time farmer and what you are asking your neighbors to do is above and beyond. I'm a real nice person but if my neighbor asked me to call them and report in adbvance what i had planned for work on my farm I would not do it. It would not be at all convenient for me to stop what I am doing and call you. From my perspective your request is not reasonable. The reason it is unreasonable is becasue you are requesting this on an on going basis. now if you or you wife was sick and temporarily in order to help your recovery, sure i would call you, jsut being neighborly and nice. but not on an ongoing basis. I don't need to report to anyone what i do and when i do it. That fact of total freedom to what I want when I want is a huge part of the reason i enjoy farming so much. "Reporting in Sargent Neighbor" is not what I would want to do. Please don't be disapointed that they are not following your request, I don't knwo any farmer who would do what you have asked. So your neighbor farmers are the norm, IMHO.

Maybe that farmer operating that huge $$$$$$$$ John Deere rig with GPS positioning doesn't have a cell phone in his rig. ;)

Anyhow that would be my excuse for not feeling the need to call you in order to finish the work of feeding the many.

The other side of the road is this, why not call the farmer the next time that you and the wife want to grill out. You most likely have more free time than him anyway. :D

As I said in 1st post on this thread I try not to work near some ones home late at night or after 10 pm. If possible I try to work near the home early and work away from it as the night gets later. I worked this field a couple weeks ago and that is how we did it because we knew it would be late when we finished and then it rained us out before we planted it. In the case the other evening I would have quit by 10 pm or earlier but we are about 30 days behind because of wet weather. The other problem I encountered the other evening was I wanted to start planting on the square side of the field which is a pretty common practice for planting. By doing this I was working towards the house at the later hour in the evening. When it is time to farm and the weather is permitting me to go I am going to go. If you were to call me and tell me you and your wife were grilling out and you would prefer me not to work around your house I would probably laugh. If you were to call me and tell me you were having a wedding in your yard in advance I would do all I could to not work near your home. It is important for farmers to get along with non farming neighbors but I believe there is a limit to what you should ask of us too. As for manure we have just a few feeder calves here and spreading manure we never have spread right near a home. One last point and I think most will farmers will agree with me we do not always know for sure when we will be in a certain field. We can plan our day out and then the weather changes, something breaks down, soil conditions are not right when we get there, fertlizer and chemical dealers don't show up on time so we have to wait and the list goes on.

Welcome to TBN! :)

I would have no problem calling my neighbor to let them know that "I'll be turning up dirt today so you might want to take the clothes off the line." Especially if they asked me to please let them know. Sheesh, that is just common courtesey. You'd tell your spouse to pull in the laundry or close the windows. It's no different. What's a phone call to a good neighbor these days anyway? A whole minute out of our busy day. Good grief.

Thanks MossRoad for the welcome , & Thats all I Meant , Most of the property around Us has recently changed hands & is farmed by only one family , That took over awhile back from a retired farmer, They are Great People & Hard workers . We get along fine with Them .

Its Just My Opinion that sometimes When some people are farming other peoples land They seem to Forget some Common Courtesey,s . I For one dont mind them starting real early in the morning or late at night . As My Working ( Playing ) Hours are from 3 am till 10 pm . Its just when they do it close to Our Property ( House ) line when its Obvious We are enjoying the outside . When it could simply be the first or last area to be plowed or cut . There are no other houses around our area , & if Your familiar with Kansas 40 mph winds are called a light breeze , lol. Which makes it Perty miserable being outside in the dust storm .

Its no BIG deal , I was just venting a little , So I appologise if I came off as arrogant, Wasn,t My intention at all . BTW, This little piece of Property ( 15 acres ) was the original Homestead & was sold off piece by piece ,From what I understand From My Wives family . The Original Very small part of Our house was built about 130 years ago & of coarse has been added onto since then. Plus its VERY secluded , So I actually have very little to complain about . & as far as Me calling Them There cellphones are constantly Busy, Plus I wouldn,t want to bother Them anyway While They are working.

Anyway , I have much respect for Most farmers , as I said I was raised on a Large farm Myself . But back in the days You did Consider & Respect Your Neighbors Privacy as much as possible. I guess times have just changed .

Bottom line is I agree with Everyone, Calling the police is Waaay out of line . & I apologise to deere755 for Highjacking Your thread. Wasn,t My intention. Ya,ll have a great day. CB

Hey cowboy357!

Welcome aboard.

Does the farmer have your number? And have you talked to them about your concern? When they turn up?

I agree with you about common courtesy. Maybe the just forgot, if you talked to them about it.

Respect goes both ways, the only way to get it is to give it.

Cowboy 357,
Welcome to the site. Thanks for posting. That being said, I think a little courtesy would be nice, but it may not be the ACTUAL FARMER (who owns/leases the land) who's on the tractor/sprayer at the time. It sounds like he's got a relatively large operation going and probably has hands out working for him. May be why you aren't getting that call you asked about

I live in a farming community, near Dothan, Alabama. 50% of the nations peanuts are grown within a 100 mile radius of Dothan. That's a lot of peanuts! When we moved up here from Florida, we knew the community we were moving into. Patience is a must when driving to town because there are almost always tractors in the road. I'm not talking about the little riding lawn mower tractors pretty much all of us on TBN own! I'm talking 500 hp rigs pulling 36ft disks, etc. When peanut harvesting comes, the air here is dust. It's like that for about 2-3 weeks. You can't keep anything clean and even though the weather is nice, you don't dare open a window, day or night! It's just part of the package for living in podunk. I wouldn't change it for the world!!!
