update

My landlord came down from Chicago for the July 4th weekend and to stay for a few days in his weekend home. He called me 1st thing this morning and asked me when the last time I had been by the field. I told him it had been about a week. He told me that someone had driven all over the field doing donuts and tearing up the beans and wanted to know when I could be over to look at it. We met this afternoon and the tracks led to the trouble makers house my landlord was furious. I told him about my little run in with the neighbor. He was on the phone with the home owner and asked him to come over and look at the damage. We talked to the home owner and he explained that other neighbors had complained about his tenant and this was the final straw he was going to ask him to move out. I was talking with the owner of the house and it turns out the man farming his land is going to retire at the end of this season so we talked about me renting it for next year. This has turned out to be a great day. I think we are done with a bad neighbor and I may have picked up some more land in the process. We are going to get together in a couple of weeks to discuss the details.

You didn't call the cops? I don't think I would let such vandalism slide..... just encourages them to do it again. If the guy doesn't want to move out evicting him is almost impossible so he could be there for quite a while longer.

Been down this road on a couple occasions. In a couple unusually wet years, I had to wait until the ground was frozen to get a combine into the field. Once I had a window of opportunity, we ran continuously until done. Friday, friday night, saturday, saturday night, and all day sunday. I had a neighbor who really took offense to the sunday work hours. In the name of "God", he walked out and leveled a shotgun at my son. In the name of all I stand for, he walked home with a busted shotgun and a pair of burning ears. He called the law. When the county deputy heard what went on, he informed "Mr Congeniality" that should he decide to tresspass and threaten us with a firearm again, he would be spending his sunday behind bars.

MOST states have what are termed "FREEDOM TO FARM" laws on the books. So long as you're actually FARMING the land, and you're not operating in an area with zoning restrictions or local laws prohibiting work related activities during certain hours, you're free to do whatever needs to be done in a normal, accepted manner. And believe me, after spending most of my life farming, working all hours of the day and night ARE normal. While the "neighbor" may feel inconvenienced and agrevated, he has not the first leg to stand upon.

This cat needs to be taught a lesson. Haul his carcass into civil court and demand compensation for crop damages. Financial lessons seem to get peoples attention.

Glad it may come to a happy ending. however.. i'd still call the law if you can see the tracks from his place to your field. might help the 'move-out' process if he gets stuck for the repairs, and or a little judicial spanking..

It is good to hear the story of your dumb neighbor is ending well for you. Although I'm a reasonable and peaceful guy I agree with Farmithjunk and Soundguy. Take his a** to court or at least press charges or what-have-ya. What he has done is beyond what I would forgive.

Just for contrast. My neighbor asked if we wanted him to leave some dead trees standing so it gives us some privacy from the road. These trees are certainly on his property. We agreed that I will cut down the ones that we I don't mind being gone. It is saying a lot, because he loves to keep his land clean looking and loves to run his tractor for any reason.

Dead trees are deadly and very dangerous to cut down.

They can't hurt anyone can they? They are dead!!!

I know the dangers of cutting down trees and also know my own limitations. I wouldn't touch anything I can't or don't know how to deal with. The guy is doing me a favor. Trust me on that. Thanks for the warning tho.

I am from the country, but now live in Houston. I feel for your problem, and am glad to read that you have it apparently solved.

We are going to have a problem like this shortly, our horse barn is located far inside the city limits of Houston, and a devloper purchased the land next to it to put patio homes on. We fear that they are going to try to force us to move, they offered to buy it, and we sid no. Then made a counter offer that was fair as we don't want to shut the barn down. They have since called the SPCA, the city, storm water management etc to get us shut down. Once the new home owners move in are they going to be upset because we ride until 2-3am sometimes with lights on? The barn has been there over 30 years and under current ownership since the 90's, it is sad to see what is going on.

Dingy, you were there first, yep, that's right folks...FIRST. This means that the people who are buying the condo's or patio homes know going into the deal that they are located right next to a farm/horse ranch and can see the large lights on poles that you use to ride at night. Don't change a thing...you don't have to conform to them, they must accept where they bought and conform to what's been happening on your farm/ranch for many, many years...even though they may not like it! But hey, they didn't HAVE to buy that particular place, right? Right!

I am so frustrated with the mentality of people who move in from wherever or even from a different part of the world and think that I/you have to conform to them...pitiful. Para Ingl駸, pulse uno:p

Being there first OUGHT to mean that you are grandfathered in and can remain doing the same thing that you have been doing, but in actuality, whoever has the most means or pull gets their way.

We had an old couple with no children in our area who had been raising animals for over 50 years. A subdivision was built around their place and people complained about the chickens, ducks, geese and goats that they raised. The authorities made them get rid of all their animals except a couple of dogs. They got rid of the animals and filed a lawsuit which dragged through the courts until it was dismissed when they died, presumably of broken hearts. :(
