Fire Extinguisher (I think I was lucky)

There are a lot of welding fire stories out there. Have several FE in the garage. I was wondering if the 2.5 Lb is big enough, especially for a fuel fire.

A 2-1/2 lb dry chemical is absolutely NOT big enough for a fuel fire!

A 5lb. would be preferred, and a 10lb. would be better.
I have 3- 10lb. and one 20lb.
I keep the 20lb. in my tractor storage bldg.

I'm about ready to order 3 of them. The small size and long time of discharge along with no shelf life and no maintenance makes the $80ea. hurt a lot less.

Unfortunately that’s a gimmick. Fire extinguishers have a standard rating for the amount of fire it will extinguish. (Like a 2A10BC). This makes no claims other than how long it will “last”. Second, removing oxygen in an open shop, building or outdoors doesn’t work. The type of extinguisher that removes oxygen is used in sealed rooms typically containing high end electronics. If this thing had a rating, was UL and or NFPA listed it would be a different story.

Always a good idea to have a fire extinguisher on board and around the shop. Oh, one in the kitchen too! Here is how I mounted a small one to my ROPS on my BX.

you can buy used water fire extinguishers cheap on eBay.. and all you need to recharge them is water, and an air compressor..

Any fire extinguisher is a good thing to have but for a diesel runner I would consider a CO2 extinguisher so it could be blasted in the air intake if there was a runaway diesel. But maybe it doesn't happen often enough to worry about.

indubitably!. but they are good for grass fires, as was mentioned..

Did explore that site and read how it works? They explain how they are working with the UL folks for testing and that it's a totally different type for them although it's been used in Europe for years. I sent that link to a professional fire fighter buddy and the part where it disrupts the combustion sequence the way a Co2 or Halon would got him curious and he'd like to test one. I've got a half dozen "regular" fire ex around the house and shop. It's the size that has me interested for my tractor & trucks, not much bigger than a road flare.

I am, and have been, a full time professional firefighter for a few decades now. I did read about the product- their is a two page PDF on the site. I just don’t think it’s a good fit for an outdoor or shop setting. Plus they don’t have a standard and quantifiable rating other than the amount of time it discharges- all others are rated by the amount of fire they extinguish.
